The Strongest Man Ever
It’s a safe bet that if Paul Anderson had been around in ancient Greece, Atlas would have been out of job. In fact, more than a few legendary strongmen would be left scratching their heads in bewilderment at the mighty acts performed by the guy from Toccoa, Georgia.
Granted some pretty legendary feats of strength have been performed over the years. The ancient Greek tell us that Heracles (later named as Hercules) by Romans was capable of overpowering a ferocious lion and altering the course of mighty rivers.
We also have it on good authority that Samson, on a good hair day, could pull down a temple. In 540 B.C Milo of Crotona carried a full grown heifer on his shoulders through the stadium at Olympia, while in the 19th century Lois Cyr pulled four work horses just as easily as someone might crawl out of their bed. But then came Paul Anderson, who on hot June day back in 1957 did something that made all of the strength feats that went before dissolve into obscurity.
On that day Anderson placed a steel safe full of lead on a specially made table and then loaded the remaining surface of table with transmissions and other heavy auto parts before crawling under the table. Then elevating his back he lifted the table off the floor. A weight of 6,270 pounds. According to Guinness book of world records, that achievement was the greatest weight ever lifted by a human being.
At one point in time Anderson set 18 American and nine world records. Further, he was a tow time USA National Champion, A World Champion and then an Olympic Gold medalist in 1956(the year before he made his Guinness Record Lift). Anderson was the first man ever to total 1,100 pounds in three Olympic lifts, the first man to clean and jerk 400 pounds and the first man to ever push press 545 pounds overhead from his shoulders.
Apart from the phenomenal feast of strength, Anderson has devoted vast efforts in establishing, operating and maintaining The Paul Anderson Youth Home, which he founded in 1961 to provide spiritual guidance, academic training, physical fitness, emotional development and social awareness for homeless and troubled teenagers in and around its location in Vidalia Georgia.
