Old timers like Grimek, Pearl, Park, Ferrigno, Mentzer,Padilla and loads of others never consumed more than 75-150 gms of protein a day. Compare it with today's bodybuilders high protein diets and it pales in comparison, but they were no slouch in physique department even by today's standards.Vets on the board.....please share & express your thoughts & beliefs in brief. I have said this in the past and I shall say it again : they don't make guys like Park, Reeves. Pearl. Grimek etc no more.

alot has changes hasn't it and I guess the supplement industry is one of the biggest 'culprits' in all of it. But in saying that science has also brought advances in training and nutrition, making the long workouts of old unnecessary and unsustainable for todays lifestyle. Of course the old style training that Columbu et al used in their day still has a place today because as we all know, there are many successful powerlifters who have gone on to become top class bodybuilders. The basics are still important!! As far as the actual physiques go,I definitely prefer the ones of old esp Reeves and Zane but concede there are a few aesthetic, symmetrical ones today that pique my interest,Alves,Sarcev to name a couple... Any comments on the women of old vs the current crop??

Man!! Speaking of women, Rachel Mclish, Cory Everson, Anja Langer, Carla Dunlap were a class act all the way. Today's women like Monica Brant, Jenny Lynn are quite pleasing but current crop of women bodybuilders...hmm...no comments.

Yeah,I prefer the look of old myself..Cory Everson looked great back then-I hated it when she got the mega boob job and the plastic surgery! Lenda Murray had a classic physique too but not many of todays women really interest me as they have too masculine a look...hmmm...

Things have changed quit a bit. I think the guys of yesterday would call us all babies with our brief routines and shaker cups

I have to say I like the look of the physiques today better than the old whether it's new supplements, training methods, better knowledge of diet or whatever. BUT with that said I really have to give it to a few of the "old-timers" for their no-nonsense training methods.
My favorite is Mike Mentzer- he's taken alot of criticism (even after his death which is pretty sad). You can say all you want about his philosphies but looks like they worked to me!

I have to agree with Rubi on this one - they would definitely think we were off the rocker if they saw some of the routines used today. I do wonder about the claimed protein qty. though. Truthfully I would think Big Lou would have been well over 75-150 grams of protein from simply feeding his massive body and that's without trying to take in extra protein. I just can't imagine someone his size not eating a large portion of protein simply from steaks and burgers. heck there are times where I'll eat a steak that has 50+ grams of protein in it in a single sitting just because I'm hungry. What's a 20oz porter house got? Maybe I'm wrong and i don't know where you got that info so I'll just leave it at that. Sal

I recall reading an article "by" Jay Cutler once that went against orevailing wisdom. He doesn't eat a whole lot of protein either, but does go very high on carbs. His theory is that if he gives his body plenty of carb calories his body will not try to use the protein for energy and then more of the protein he eats will be used for muscle.
