Mark and I were on the way to gym.
Back day.
I can see Mark is dragging from the diet. He is unusually quiet. I tell him I am feeling extremely strong. "i feel like I can pull 585lbs!" I tell him.
We talk about the workout, as we pull onto the street.
We decend the steps as always.
Deadlifts first.
135 for 10 as always smooth and easy
225 for 5 as we prepare for the heavy set.
315 for 5 for another easy set. Marks arms look like marble, he is coming in nicely.
405, I pull for only 3 as I try to conserve my energy for a a new personal best.
Mark pulls 405 for 5 hard reps.
495 I pull for a single, feels good, but not as good as I would like.
Mark pulls it with all his might, but just can't pull it up. He struggles and pulls but is stuck and can't go the inch he needs to finish it off.
He curses at himself and wonders why his strength failed him.
I load the bar to 585lbs. The damn thing feels as if it was bolted to the floor. I can't pull it more then an inch.
Today's workout is not looking good.
Bent rows are next
3 sets of easy with 225 lbs. The reps are hard, but we both are a little mentally drained from the deadlift failures.
I need to get a spark back into this workout.
T-bars are next.
I load 5 -25lbs plates with a ten pound plate inbetween each one.
We perform descending sets pulling off a plate each time we fail.
The curses, spit and tears are free flowing.
Even though this set was super intense, something is missing.
Next up seated rows.
Instead of the normal 300 lbs, I back off to 250 lbs.
Mark looks a little tired as am I, but none the less willing.
I pull him aside
"Mark, this is the time. This is the time that seperates us from them. This is the time that we look deep into ourselves and give it everything we got. Your running on fumes my boy. Your a dragester that only has enough fuel to get out off the blocks. But deep inside you is the heart of a lion. Do this..."
Mark sits down, grabs handle and pulls. Just as he begins to fail, I yell "time to dig deep, show me what you got!" Mark clenches his teeth and pulls, he gets 5 more reps beyond what was possible.
We finish the cable pulls with 2 more sets. Just like the first super intense set using everything we got.
Dumbell pullovers are next.
I use 120 he uses 60. 2 sets with an extreme stretch.
Then Hypers.
I tell Mark "look young man, i am going to give you one chance and one chance only to a do a good set. I want you to do these hypers until you can't anymore. But when you feel like stopping, clear your mind, push the pain away, keep your face straight and close your eyes. Runners hit a wall and keep going never feeling the pain. I want you to hit that wall and go on. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME!"
He nodds.
Mark hits 50 reps, then I see him hit the wall, all of a sudden the room goes quiet and Mark keeps going up and down. His face is strangly calm, only sweat pours down. He keeps going.
Somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes. He can't move. He stands only to buckle because his spinal erectors are waisted.
He sits and watches me perform the same ritual.
We collect ourselves and do a few sets of shrugs.
I use the 175's and he uses the 120's.
I joke telling him mine are called dumbells, but his are called "tinkerbells."
I joke when he performs his set
"come on tinkerbell! Lets go."
We joke and finish up.
In the car on the return home, I tell mark how proud of him. I've never seen a person turn a bad workout good. But you did it my friend you did it.
