After spending much of the night awake with my daughter and her high fever (she's ok today), I then spent a few hours at emergency with my son, who split his lip pretty bad. Poor guy. He was playing with my wife's exercise bands (I know, I know), seeing how far he could stretch it with one end stuck under the couch when it snapped and caught him in the upper lip. Went right through. LOTS of blood. 8 stitches. I feel terrible for him, but he was a real hero. Now he looks like he was in a bad fight, and he can't eat or drink comfortably. He slept well, and the swelling is down slightly today, but he's beating himself up for being dumb. I told him it's normal to feel dumb after an accident, but that accidents happen to everyone, and all accidents are dumb, or else they wouldn't happen, so he's no more or less dumb than anyone else in the world.
I feel SO bad for him.

Poor guy. At least later on in life he will look back and laugh at this. Tell him this story Rich
When I was 6, I was playing the back yard with my younger sister. We were drumping off a little hill. The neighbors yard had post fence around it. Instead of jumping off the hill I "dove" off the hill and went head first into the fence post. Woke up hours later not knowing what happend!

It's life, and all a part of growing up-unfortunately. Could have been worse though, right?
When I was about 10, I was playing around with a buddy, and somehow we started throwing garlic salt (!) at one another. So, I ended up running to the bathroom attempting to hide- brilliant idea right? Well, soon as I opened the door, he was right there and threw the salt at me. I ducked to the left to avoid getting hit by the salt. But, while it was a brilliant Sugar Ray Leonard-like move I made on the garlic salt, the bathroom sink jumped up and hit my left eye like a Mike Tyson right cross. I was down for the count, woke up bleeding and as I was trying to stop it, my dad comes pulling up and did I ever get a chastising for that one. No stiches, and only a small hardly noticeable mark today. Then there was the day I thought it would be okay to shoot a board with a BB gun, but the board was a few feet away. The BB ricocheted off the board and hit me about an inch above my eye on the forehead. I was lucky. Not too many people found out about that one.
I had plenty of accidents as a kid. It's part of growing up. Give him some ice cream, do something he likes, and I'm sure he won't even remember it in a day or two.

You can let your son know he is not the only one who has been attacked by exercise bands. MY 15 YEAR OLD was playing around with them one day, had one of the ends (hard handle) on one foot and was pulling the other end towards his head. Told him to stop, he was gonna get hurt but he just looked at me with that I'm a teenager and you're just a mom who doesn't know anything look. Needless to say, he walked around with a big red swollen mark on his forehead for a few days. Even he had to laugh at himself (as he struggled to hold back the tears) When he was 3, he was pretend shaving with his dad (I would give him a popsicle stick to use as a razor). The stool he was standing on slipped, he ended up hanging from the door handle of the vanity. The handle went in his mouth and right through his cheek, there was blood everywhere. We managed to pry him off and get him to the hospital, he required stitches both inside and out and like your son found it very difficult to eat or drink for days. I made all his meals into shakes, nice and thin so he didn't have to suck too hard, and bought all kinds of crazy and colorful straws for him to drink with. Lots of hugs and kisses and a few weeks later he was as good as new Hope everyone is feeling better son (even mom and dad )

He has 8 stitches in the area above his upper lip. I think he'll still be remembering it in a couple of days. Of course stuff like this has happened to most of us. Me too - more than once. I cut the big knuckle on my index finger to the bone on some broken glass ... that was fun ... seeing the bone and all. Then there was the time I was trying to cut a plastic model plane with a knife. I was holding it in my left hand and cutting through with a steak knife with my right. The glue suddenly gave and I cut my thumb and index finger - the thumb from the top parallel to the bone right through the nail, and the index finger right through to bone. You can kind of deal with it when it happens to you well enough. Wait until it happens to your kid. I was very calm and strong for him through the whole thing. But later, when everyone was asleep and I lay in bed .... well, I was pretty sure I was going to cry. I had to hold my 9-year old son's head steady while I watched a doctor insert a needle 4 times to freeze the area, while my son cried out, then watch the doc stitch the inside of his mouth, the inside of his lip, and the surface of his lip. It was a bit difficult. Man this fathering thing can suck sometimes! It's all worth it though. He's such a champ.

Sometimes when it rains it pours, Rich. Sounds like you are a concerned and loving dad, which is as important as meds and recovery. Hope everything works out.

Yeowch! Tiffany that sounds like a nightmare! Was there much of a scar? The doc did a really good job, just looks like he has a dimple. I know exactly how you felt, we had to wrap him up in a sheet, mummy style and it took his dad, me and two nurses to hold him down. Anytime we are out and he sees a silly straw he says "remember when......"

Rich,
Earning your "Dad Stripes" is tough.
When my daughter was 3 years old, she sliced her chin open until the fatty tissue was sticking out. BLood everywhere. It took me, my wife and a nurse to hold her down the same way you had to with your son. 4 stitches for her. All she did was scream and cry, as she looked me in the eye as I held her head still. Still haunts me sometimes, She is 28 years old now. Funny how things happen.....my grandaughter now has a scar in the same place. Difference? My dauther took her to the ER. They cleaned it up, and "glued it back together" No stitches. Amen.
The toughest part, for me, being a dad, was when my daughter moved out when she was 18 (she wasn't daddys little girl anymore), and when I had to throw my son out of the house, 2 weeks before his 21st B-day....drug abuse...stealing from me and his mom (tough love).
Big Picture? He's been through rehab, lives back at home, and is a supervisor at his job (but he's still a pain in my butt!), and my daughter is marreid to a...ahem...school teacher!..has 3 beautiful kids, and is a stay at home mom.
If the roots are good, the tree will grow up strong!
Water them well, Rich! You're doing great!

LOL - a day or two? He has 8 stitches in the area above his upper lip. I think he'll still be remembering it in a couple of days. I'm sure you saw my sarcasm in that..... If you read my training log, you know my training partner received a bloody lip from me, and will also be walking around for more than a few days because he wouldn't listen to me. In this case, however, it's a good thing! ;D But, I do hope your son is better by now, reminder or not.

The stitches came out Friday morning, he can drink without a straw, and his kiss is working again!
