Well, today I committed myself for one year to Golds Gym. Only worked out at a Golds once (you could say I got hooked), but for the last 7 years I've worked out at small independent gyms.
The gym I'm at now (www.thefitnesscore.com), is a small family owned place, and I've loved it from the moment I stepped in there. When he shut the urinal off because one of his members continues to piss all over the floor, I "didn't mind." When the chalk was outlawed as I joined, I didn't mind. When he told people to stop leaving plates on the machines, I didn't mind. When he slowly but steadily got rid of my favorite pieces of equipment, I minded but let it go. What really was the final straw however, was him tying down all the benches. Now, no decline DB presses can be done. Benches have designated areas that they must go back to.
I'm a fu*kin' great member....pay all my dues up front for 3 months, never late. Replace my weights, clean up after myself and the others that don't...and I like the atmosphere/people. But I guess there is just a time when things must come to an end. 3.5 years of working out there, and little "improvements" though there have been (just not to my liking). Hours being restricted more and more. Equipment disappearing, and overall just a lack of things to do for me.
So, when I heard I can save $13/month, have 6 clubs (vs. one) with no restricted use, and it's Golds where the stuff is constantly upgraded, replaced, cleaned/maintained, and there's a bigger variety of everything(!), I was sold.
This will also probably be the end of me having training partners for awhile, unless they decide to follow me but as of yet it seems they're going to 24hr Fitness.
