For any of you who have read my written exploits in the gym will know that me and the nephew have trained off and on at a basement gym known as the Iron Pitt. Now this gym is at least 30 miles from his home. But it is worth it. Anyway I decided to see if there was a gym closer to us to cut down on travel times. I will not mention the gyms names out of respect for their owners.
Gym #1- upon entering the gym the lady behind the desk said "if you need to rent a towel its 50 cents and they are in the locker room." uh-oh. Not to much in the way of weights, and the machines were in a pretty sad state. Surprising since the owner promotes a well known local drug tested show.
Gym #2-Pretty hardcore. Lots of weights, decent crowd, but a little pricey. Some airbrushed bodybuilders on the wall, cardio upstairs, and some good machines. Ok but not hardcore enough.
Gym #3-Named after a precious stone. Use to be a gold's gym back in the day. I asked the guy, "how heavy do your dumbells go?" his reply "120's, pretty heavy huh?" My reply, "well actually not......." To much talking and way too many tv's. Nothing like training heavy while watching CNN? Lame!!!!!!!!!!!
Gym #4- Named after a home for the GOD's. This place was rather cool. Lots of weights, and room to boot. Boxing ring in the back. Not to mention a blond hottie behind the desk. Noticed a few hardcore lifters and a few nationally ranked bodybuilders. Liked the place. On par with gym #2
Gym #5- a well known bodybuilder owns this place. He is retired now. It caters to everyone, yet he made a real effort to keep folks seperated. Meaning the weights are in one room, while cardio is in another, spinning in another and aerobics in yet another. The hallway is lined with pics of the member who have competed, like a mini gold's venice. A cool place but too mainstream for our taste.
So me and the nephew trained at a total of 5 gyms. All fell short of the Iron Pitt! I really cant put my finger on it.
Maybe its the hardcore blaring music
Maybe its the plethora of weight, (dumbells going up to 175!)
Maybe its the fact that every person who lifts there just goes to train.
Maybe its because you have to descend the steps and all the equipment is painted red (looks like your in hell).
Not sure maybe its all of the above. When we get there the its got a certain aura. Its electric. You want to train hard. Everyone trains hard, your encouraged to scream. your encouraged to lift heavy.
No complaints from others when you train that way too. The younger kids train hard, but are still learning........while the older guys nod in acknowledgement when you do deadlifts.
People still do power cleans!
Its something special alright. I love it, and will never abandone it!
Its home!
