I drag my lazy ass out of bed. At 37, I am begining to wonder if I can keep up with my nephew (17). Along with my 14 year old son we train balls to walls! I am feeling it. Legs hurt, Lower back is tight and sore, shoulders hurt, and elbows always feel inflammed!
So this morning at 6:00am I get into the car to pick up Mark. Damian has decided to train later in the day.
I down my vitamins and slam some protein. Its chest day and Mark is 4 weeks out.
I pick him up and he seems down. I know the diet is getting to him. Not to mention his cat was missing for 2 and 1/2 days.
He recently sent me pics on Friday and although I believe he has improved Mark still doesn't see it.
We get to the gym and begin.
Bench presses. Mark weighs in at 202 lbs. We warm up with 135, then 185. Mark starts with 225, and nails 5 good reps. I get 8 with 315. I go to 365 and have trouble getting 3. While Mark hits 225 again but squeezes out 6. I go back to 315 for 8.
Mark's last set. For whatever reason the raido is so low we can't hear it. So its just us. That and the diet has made Mark a little emotionless. I give him some encouragement
"Come on Mark give me 7, show me what you got."
Boom Mark gets 7 with 2 forced reps.
He is tired, but he reaches from somewhere deep down inside and pulls from his reserve. His is on his 2nd day of only 50 carbs, and man it shows in his demeanor.
Next up Incline. I do 3 sets of 275 for 6, while Mark gets 3 sets with 185 but gets several forced reps. I keep telling him that no other teen is training this hard. He has to show me he wants it.
Mark snorts, looks at me with his eyes filled with fire and intensity. He nods. Thats all he can do. All his energy goes to the set. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,.....................8 reps. I tell him two more, he grunts nods and gets two forced reps.
We always train heavy for the first two sets. Then we head straight for some insane blood volume torture.
I set the incline bench in between the cable cross overs. I also put 100lbs on each side of the hammer chest press.
I tell him to do one set to failure of incline cable flys, and then immediately go over to the hammer machine for a descending set.
The viens start popping, the sweat starts pouring and the cuss words flow freely. Yet Mark bears down and gets every rep he is told to do. His chest contorts, flexes and is squeezed, only to be strecthced and the process repeated. He stares blankly off into the distant, lord only knows what is going on in his head. But damn the boy is hungry! He grits out every rep, with white hot intensity.
Yeah he wants to win the states, he wants to be bigger. He doesn't claim to be champ, but he sure trains like one!
30 minutes of cardio, and some vitargo, followed shortly by 50 grams of whey, and he can start talking again.
I have never seen anyway on my life take all I could give and smile.
I am proud of him (your all sick of me saying it I am sure).
Mark nods and we stumble up the steps.
Time to grow!
