I just talked to a buddy of mine. He was doing incline bench press this morning and had some kid lifting the weight off for him. He had 225 on the bar. I guess the kid was distracted for some reason and and let go of the bar before my buddy was ready. The bar fell from arms length and landed on his chest. The result is a broken sternum and 6 to 8 weeks off from the gym. Always use a good spotter.

Couldn't agree with Eric more.........on the rare occassions when my brother can't make it to the gym, I just don't trust someone else to spot for me. I'll rely more on machines, particularly the Smith Machine, that day for the safety factor.

Not too many people at my gym that I trust to spot me and your post is the reason why Eric.
Too many newbies in the gyms today and not enough experienced people like back in the day...........back then you could ask just about anybody for a spot with no worries!!

I told him he was lucky it didn't fall on his throat like the picture Dustin posted.
He is pretty bummed out. We were supposed to start training together a few days next week. He also wanted to compete again this spring but now isn't sure.

I don't even bother to ask anyone for a spot.

I wish I HAD a spotter.
When I used to train with a partner it was always good to know that he knew how to spot, and even more importantly, knew how to spot ME. Same with me for him. I knew that when he was struggling for the last 1-2 reps, he would pause for an eternity about halfway up. Most spotters would take the bar at that point. I knew just to be ready with my hands under but not touching, and focus on him and not the hot librarian doing adductors. On the rare occasions when one of us was not at the gym, there were some regs we trusted for a safe spot, but they didn't know our lifting patterns so it was not ideal.
Now, I train alone at home. And I'm moving some pretty heavy weight (for me). I do it in my power rack with the safeties set just at chest level. For inclines it's pretty safe because of the angle, but I worry when I do flat bench that in a serious emergency I might not be able to "throw" the bar to the safeties to keep it away from my face.

Eric,
First I'm sorry to hear about you friend. I hope he recovers quickly.
I think we've all seen some pretty scary stuff. I know I have.
Since I've been powerlifting, we've actually taken the time to "LEARN" how to spot one another. My trainer was squatting some massive weight the other day, and he makes sure he has one experienced spotter behind him and a couple people on the bar too.
If someone asks me to spot, I'll always help out, and recruit some others too if needed.
ALWAYS better safe..........than sorry.

Long story that goes with it.

A good spotter is so hard to find-my last training partner(a guy) was always checking out girls and talking on his cell to his latest' piece of fluff'. Fortunately I've never been injured but I've got stuck in 'awkward' positions from time to time.

i believe this...always use someone you can trust
i asked a guy in my gym to spot me... a red flag went up when he was like "huh? ok"
so im doing DB inclines, no problem right. i was going for 4-6 reps with the weight. as i hit the sixth rep at the top, he grabs one of the dumbells from my hand. WHO DOES THAT?!?!!? i nearly toppled over to the other side because of the weight difference

Idiot puts on his bench shirt and singlet. Idiot warms up. Idiot runs off to bathroom. Idiot does some coke to get ready for event. Idiot then gets picture taken of him. (see above) Idiot was fine though, no damage.

^^ Exactly. One of the dumbest things I've ever heard of.
Obviously, we didn't know about the "pepsi" incident until after the fact.

There was a guy at a gym I lifted at years ago that used to go in the bathroom and do coke before he benched. Maybe that is the thing to do when benching heavy.
On second thought I think I will keep avoiding the flat bench presses. Haven't done them in years.
