Ok Everybody...my turn to vent...so excuse my rambling:
Powerlifitng or Bodybuilding
I've heard a lot of your opinins on this, and I asked for a reason. I'm not sure which way to go on this, or if I need to go at all.
Bodybuiling: Enjoy it, Made good progress in a short time. Diet is VERY tough for me. But I like the look. I question my ability to ever reach the level I want. Limited contests due to TRT.
Powerlifitng: Ok progress in short time. Learned a new way of doing things. Diet is easier, but I don't like the look. Progress is killing my joints and ligaments. More weight, increase possibility of injury. Contests VERY limited due to TRT.
Enjoy working out with my wife, but powerlifitng is taking her in a different direction. She is being very successfu, and that's a good thing. I'm proud of her. But her opprtunities are different then mine as a powerifter.
Do both? Probably not wise. One or the other? Have I given powerlifitng enough of a chance? My trainer is wise, and tells me to be patient.
Reality check= I'm 50 years old and not getting any younger.
SO.... that's my conundrum. Over the next few weeks I will be contemplating what to do. Share your thoughts?l

Do what you really want to do. Whatever makes you HAPPY and feel good! Thats it. I personally would love to do both. I train primarily for strength anyway. In the offseason the diet is much more lose so this portion of the year can be a mix of PL + BB IMO. Then, when its competition season the focus can change slightly due to the calorie decefit. I still prefer to train for strength during this phase as well, but we do get a bit weaker.. This gives me a balance of what makes me happy. I am def thinking of doing a PL meet in the near future. Just have to find one around. Anyway, now I am babbling. Hope this helps in some way there, Sir Beefmeister!

Frank,if I were you,I`d go down to around 150 pounds or less.............whatever weight I looked best at, and bodybuild only.
At 50 years old,the above scenario would be your best bet for overall fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
Just my 2 centavos!

Frank, Terry and I read this thread and talked a bit about your "dilemma" and here are our thoughts: We agree with Tim that you should probably get down to 150-160 so your appearance is closer to that of a BB. Additional body weight, unless it is muscle, really has no benefit to you for PLifting especially in the wt classes you would be competing in. Now, a little food for thought, why not pick one PLifting meet now, since you have been training that way and get it over with. Mainly to rule out if you enjoy it or not. No one can make an educated decision unless one has actually done something to say yes or no to liking something. If you do one meet and do not like it, then you can be done with PLifting and concentrate solely on BB knowing that is what you REALLY enjoy. You can continue to debate the pros and cons for the rest of your life but unless you choose a direction and stay the course you will end up going back and forth, wasting alot of valuable time and not progressing in either sport. JUST DO IT!

Agree 100% with Karrie. Frank, give the PL a shot and know for sure whether you want to go in that direction or not. If not, then back to BB. Here if you want to talk. Good luck.

Like when you see two girls out in public and your friends ask "Which one would you choose?" and I reply... "Why choose? Do both!" ;D I think we can all see the logic in my analogy, even if there isn't a shred of truth to the outcome!

I still see NO problem with doing both. WHY NOT?

Frank- to me it depends upon whether you're interested in the competetive aspects of both sports or just one. For me, I've found that I'm not really built for powerlifting- I can lift really heavy for a while then need a break- I'm burned out, joints hurt, etc.; I like the feel of lifting heavy and honestly, getting a little chunky to push the weight.. but like you I dont' like the look it gives me as much.
So..... for me- I like to be a bit of a powerlifter for a majority of the "offseason" time of year and then ease back into the bodybuilding mode of lifts and diet when the competitive season (or in my case, the summer time "show-off" time- haha.

If your joints can stand it then I think you could still do PL in the 'off' season and BB the rest of the year. I don't know if you've heard of Synflex-it is a pharmaceutical grade joint supplement that several of my competitor friends swear by for alleviating their joint woes(they compete in fitness)...or you could try Cissus which is also meant to be good.

ALL great advice!
Rubes: Glad I'm not alone! Tim: Right to the point Brother! You've seen what I look like, so you have a good idea! Karrie/Terry: Thank you for your words. You are both the greatest. Gerry: Thanks for being there Brother! It means a lot! YB: Man do we think alike or what?!? (the girl part I mean!) BMR: Your story sounds so much like mine! I appreciate the empathy Bro! Beckster: Thanks for the leads on the supps. I'll give it a shot.
All in all, I haven't made a decision yet. We leave for Denver Bench Nationals for my wife's meet on Friday. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to talk more with Greg, and the others, and have some more time to think this out. I'm always open to what ya'll have to say, and hope to integrate as many of your ideas as possible.
Thank you my friends! ;D
