What are your thoughts on artificial sweeteners? Will they evetually kill us, or.....??
I just recently switched my protein to Jay Robb to avoid the use of AS's.. I am slowly trying to clean everything up for health purposes. Think I am wasting my time or do you think this is a valid thing to do?

I'm often asking myself the same question! So I do use it (ex: in oatmeal) but I try not to abuse it and reduce my consumption.
I buy Bio X Isolate protein which is a NO FLAVOR (No sweeteners) product. Tastes awful, but who really cares about taste? :-) Ok dont anwser me :-)

Jen and I drink diet soda on Sundays and maybe out to eat. I just switched to Poland Springs sparkling water with rasberry, lime flavor. All natural. I now brew my own green tea for ice tea. I may even by chicken that has not been caged up or whatever... I think I am nuts, but...

It's one thing I just don't worry about. I like my coke zero... I don't add it to oatmeal but don't avoid diet drinks.

I avoid aspartame alot more than I used to-it gives me a laxative effect and I 'think' it also gives me headaches. I also advise my clients to avoid it too because there simply isn't he evidence one way or the other. I would certainly err on the side of caution.

1 packet of splenda every day I doubt will kill you in the long run.
2 packets though.. ;D

I don't see any problems with it. I drink 1/2 gallon of diet Coke a day and probably use 25 or 30 packs of Equal or Splenda. Been doing this for as long as I can remember and am still alive.
Something is going to kill you in the end anyways.

I guess this goes to show that we are all different. I never advise aspartame for pregnant clients because you just don't know what it will do to the fetus...

Good article about Aspartame. Unless you are ingesting grams of the stuff a day, there isn't an issue for most people. I am sure some people could have adverse reactions but the same could be said about almost anything. As Becky said, pregnant mothers should avoid the stuff. drugsafetysite.com/aspartame

I use a lot of it. I probably should try and reduce it, but .... it seems like the lesser of two evils? Though I have been wondering what's worse for me - a couple spoons of sugar or honey that I could work off, or some chemical designed to trick my palate into thinking I just ate carbs.
I think it changes the way your body uses insulin. I recall reading that the sweet taste initially triggers insulin release, but when your body realizes that it was a false alarm your insulin production goes down - even when it IS required, which ultimately makes carbs more fattening than they would otherwise be for you.

Maybe this is why I am soooo darn carb sensative.

I go with the Splenda, but ANY other AS gives me a migraine (NutraSweet, etc.).
I try to stay away from ANY soda, not because of the nutritional affects, but because it just makes me feel to darn bloated.
And like Vince said hair loss, etc. Hell, if I read an article that says it will make you shorter, I'm a gonner! LOL!
Rich has some interesting theories there about insulin effects. Anything to back that stuff up Rich?
As far as AS going to "kill us"...Well, I'm not too sure about that. The info out there is SO varied. You read one "scientific" report that says it's ok, and another "scientific" report that states it's bad for you. In a way it's like religion. You have faith in something, or you don't.
I've got an older sister who ALWAYS complains about articles she's read about AS, and their terrible affects. Then she piles REAL sugar on everything, eats terrible junk food late at night, and complains that she's gaining weight and needs to exercise! Well.....no duh!
And ''like Eric said, "either way, something (or somone) gonna kill ya in the end anyways!"

Thanks Rich,
I followed along until I read the part that said this research was done on rats. This is probably an issue that needs continued research, especially on humans. Appears to still be in an infant stage of research.
I've been seeing an endocrynologist, and I have a follow up appointment with him in the beginning of March. I'll try to solicite his opinion on AS and see what he thinks. I beleive he (and his family: father, brothers/ all doctors), specialize in this arena.
Thanks again!
Frank

I like my Splenda in my coffee, hot cereal or plain yogurt. I drink my a few diet pop a day. I know a few diabetics at work like Splenda as well.
I am going to keep taking it and it is one habit I won't kick. I need a little sweetness in some of my foods.
I do believe in drinking a fair amount of water through out the day.
