Angie,
The salsa is a great idea. I agree that the sodium content must be high, but most of us drink alot of water (1.5 gallons or more) so that shouldn't end up being a huge problem.

high sodium can cause problems...so i tend to go as low as i can even though i drink alot of water. I know eggs contain sodium..but that can't be helped. I choose low sodium tuna....fresh salmon....but the chicken and steaks...i have to wash it out before cooking.. so yea.

The thing with sodium is that it does cause one to hold water. As mentioned, you can drink water to assist with that. Some folks are much more sodium sensitive than others. I never was. However, since I started competing, I have found that I am progressively more and more reactive to sodium intake. Tim, any other competitors, find this? Perhaps I've always been just as sensitve, I'm just now really tuned in to how my body looks. It's pretty tough on the ego to go from shredded to soft... and sodium intake alone can cause this -- I've done it many times Then again, the volume of chicken I normally consume contains somewhere around five times the "RDA" (RDA is in quotes because there technically is NO RDA for sodium, just a guideline value). The eggwhites I take in are around double the "RDA"... so the addition of any more sodium is valueless, and noteably affects how much water I'm holding. There is also a point of deminishing returns with consuming high amounts of sodium combined with water... you're giving the sodium something to hold onto. Though it will flush the sodium out of your body, if you continue to consume as much, or more sodium, what you're holding won't change; your body will be busy flushing the new excess. If you cut sodium and consume high amounts of water (as some of us actually do for a contest), it takes days to flush it out (three, maybe more). Also, if you tend to be... on the chubby side ... guess what fat cells are mostly made up of? Water. Sodium drives water into the fat cells... then give them more water and, effectively, you're fatter. T

I never thought about sodium intake before, but I was younger and not working towards a body building goal. I think after cutting it out of my system that I have what's considered a rebound effect or something? Just a little makes me hold several pounds a fluid. I do believe being more in tune is a huge part of the new 'sensitivity' to sodium. I imagine the less b/f you have the quicker you are to notice an extra pound or 2 of fluid. Angie
