I was wondering...what are you guys oppinion on just Pure Protein before workout?
This guy i know just either downs a scoop of protein shake or a can of tuna just before his workout. I was wondering ..wouldn't that cause him to lose muscle?
Of course he told me he already had carbs the meal before.

There's nothing you can eat or not eat that will make you lose muscle for a workout (unless you've been starving yourself for days on end). As far as "fuelling workouts" (as in energy) goes, I've formed and changed my opinion on this many times. I've come to my current belief after contest dieting a few times. Long story short, what you burn during a workout (for calories) is what you ate YESTERDAY, or at least several hours ago... Basically, the body "burns" glycogen in the muscles for fuel. The glycogen gets "put" in the muscles through the digestion process (in other words, it takes time)... so, simple sugars aside, what you eat takes HOURS and HOURS to actually affect your muscles. Now, assuming that you eat properly, constantly and consistently, then WHEN you work out (in my opinion) isn't so much relevant in terms of what you eat or don't eat before a workout. In other words, it's not a science. If you're constantly fuelling your body, work out when it fits your time schedule. What's really important is what you eat after a workout. That's where a shake comes in so handy as it's absorbed/assimilated by the body REALLY quickly. And if you've added dextrose (and no form of rice is a simple sugar and no form of rice can replace corn sugar ), it'll be assimilated that much quicker. Getting your glycogen stores replaced after a workout is what's truly important. This will happen automatically if you're eating all the time and properly (as mentioned above) but some believe the quicker you restore, the better. I'm not a fan of dextrose; I don't use it myself but I do believe in or "accept" the concept of using A LITTLE post workout only. Protein powders are so efficient these days by themselves that they act very much like dextrose without the addition of the stuf (again, in my opinion). T

yep no ..destrose here either...i just down some Rice and Banana. Best thing i can find...and its been working! ;D
