Hey bro's whats your individual macronutrient breakdown for pre-contest or just fat loss in general if you don't compete.
Also how effective was each approach for you?
I was just curious as to how many different people use different ratios of carbs, fats, protein to acheive similiar results.

If you don't compete....there is no reason to look "CUT"..so lowering carbs is not the answer i would say.
People might follow 40-40-20 pro-carb-fat for general fat loss...but I personally cycle it like this
Hard training day 40-40-20 Med training day50-30-20 Rest like a pig day 50-25-25

I am competetive, but some people want to lose fat and you don't have to compete as a bodybuilder to do that, think about it!
If for example you are a 35 year old out of shape man and you want to lose fat, as to be more healthy and appealing to the eye, or a middle aged woman needing to lose fat for medical purposes i.e. high blood pressure, diabetes etc.

Well...i did try experimenting on a Competitive diet ...didn't last more than 40 days. Its rough..and i wouldn't suggest it . But if you must...and want to look "cut". You would generally eat VERY clean...lower carbs.
Lowering carbs...means your body will use fat more as energy. It makes you look cut more because carb holds water..and since you lower carbs..less water is being held....And also since carb counts as a calorie...lowering calorie is the way to lose fat.
So essentially lowering carbs makes you look "CUT" and lose fat because you're lowering carb cals. But on the down side you will have so little energy to do weights or cardio. And you'll feel miserable...and angry all the time.

I do roughly a 50,40,10 when pre-contest dieting.
The reason the fats are so low is because I supplement with no extra fats as I beleive I get enough trace fat just from my diet.
When bulking,I honestly haven`t got a clue.

hehe...i always try to get 20% of my cals from fat. Its nice to eat a TABLESPOON of almond butter with milk before bed. Its like desert. And the flax makes my protein shake taste like chunky cookies and cream ice cream. Not to mention all the good seafood filled with those omegas.

My approach is very similar to what Tim mentioned. There are many other factors involved as comp. day approaches but they are specific to competition and I wouldn't employ them unless I was intending to step on stage. As for bulking, I don't take a much different approach either, however the total cals increase equally by 1/3 or more. Very basic, very effective. T PS - Max, while it tastes good... it's JUST like eating dessert... calories that could be spent elsewhere like more protein

hehe...troy..believe it or not..my protein is pretty high for my body size and weight already..and my carbs are matching it. But either way...Tim's method on just having trace fat is good..but overall health..i like the omegas...plus..seafood is famous for it..so we're a match. Other people have their own ways too...like no carb at all and just protein and fats...but i wouldn't suggest it.

Max, you're naturally a pretty lean guy so you have nothing to worry about there. The point I'm getting at is if I'm going take in extra calories (which I feel pointless fat is), I'd rather put more building materials, condusive to muscle growth, in my body instead.
With, of course, the exception of a "cheat meal"... then it's no-holds-barred ;D. Pass me the prime rib ;D
