since life DOES happen, if I have to skip a meal (or two) at some point during the day, should I try to compensate by adding a little bit to later meals?

I would!!
You should try to get your protein requirements in daily as you know, and if you can add a bit more protein to the remaining meals,I think you should,or take in some extra shakes.
On the flipside,it isn`t going to kill you unless it becomes habitual.

word...my boss left suddenly on bereavement, so my coworker and myself were left with a whole lot of work that HAD to be done today (i work at the opera office, there is a show tonight, so we HAD to have it done)...suffice to say, I missed TWO meals, so I ate twice as big for the next two...it only happens rarely, so i won't give it too much thought

i personally would rather go for a protein bar (even though i'm against it)...then skip a meal...
but if i do...i don't make it up ...i just continue on with the day's daily diet routine..and starte fresh tomorrow.

i'm dieting down now though, so if I leave out a meal, I'm severely undereating really...and protein bars are too expensive for me honestly,

Sockrocker, I too run into problems with my meals. I have a plan that says I MUST eat X calories (at the moment that's 5,500 1/2 protein/fat cals and 1/2 carb cals -- that's how I break it down). Even on contest diet, it's the same thing (last year that was around 3,000 - 3,500). No matter what, within 24 hours I must get that food in. That means if I screw up and miss two or three and it's 10:00 at night, I eat three meals. Yes, it takes me a while Generally the "no eating after 6:00" rule applies to the typical couch potato (that's who those studies were performed on)... As long as it's within the 24 hours, it's fair game (on our on/off season diets). I have tested this theory many, many times. As long as I'm eating proper food, I (and my wife) have found no difference in eating at all times of day/night, in volume, NONE. However, it's much better to spread across the for other reasons: cuts down on cravings as your always full (especially when on contest diet ), steady fuelling of the body, digestion like clockwork, etc. T
