In the March 2005 issue of Men's Fitness, (pg. 61), they have a table to figure out caloric needs. It says to take my body weight x 11 to get my "resting metabolic rate". Take my R.M.R. x 1.6 to get my caloric expenditure through basic daily activities. At a weight of 180 lbs, this means I burn 3168 calories on an average day. My questions are 1) what exactly does "resting metabolic rate" mean and 2) I only take in about 2500-2800 calories a day so why am I not losing weight? I run 3 miles about 3-4 days a week and workout 3 days a week. 3) Has anyone heard of this equation before or have any idea of it's accuracy?

JW,I`m not discounting this formula ,but I don`t think it`s necessary.........if you list a typical days eating plan that you use for your basic diet,it would be much easier to help you out.
All the tables,graphs,formulas,etc. ,are not needed and only help to complicate things,and confuse people.
Much better to keep it simple,and basic,and look at your training,and diet,ie.macronutrient intake,training routine and frequency,cardio type and frequency,etc.etc.
Just my opinion,and we will be glad to offer any help we can!!

resting metabolic rate refers to the number of calories your body burns while you are at rest.
The equation will only give you a ballpark figure for your rmr so like Tiim mentioned, post up some details

That issue of Men's Fitness also mentioned "fitday.com" and I've gone there to see the breakdown of protien, carbs, fat, intake. It just didn't sound right to me that I would be burning 3000 calories a day doing just basic routine things. I'm trying to not get caught up in the whole "weight" issue and worry more about body fat etc... I'm no bodybuilder by any means, but I want to look good. I've been working out for about 1.5 years now and have seen definate results. My problem is I eat too much garbage! Fitday.com is helping me to see how the foods I eat breakdown into what I need or don't need. Thanks for your reply's. JW

jw... I can't add to what Tim said about the formula. It's based on statistics and who knows what the cross-section was. Still, there's nothing wrong with using something like for a STARTING POINT.
Something you mentioned above caught my attention: you said you run 3 miles a day but can't figure out why you're not losing...
The piece of information we're missing here is WHAT you eat. Through experience, both myself and others I've trained and through many people on boards such as this one and people like Tim, I've come to learn that absolutely everything is about what you eat. Period.
Cardio can HELP kill some cals and up your metabolism, but that's of little use if you're diet is out to lunch. And no, a calorie is not just a calorie.
I used to border on obesity and I'll tell you I ran a good hour on the treadmill 5-6 days/week, I was taking 3 martial arts classes totalling 6 hrs/week EACH (and they were VERY high intensity) and spent a lot of time walking, hiking, etc. None of the activity ever had an effect on my weight at all.
It was only after I decided to try a competition that I learned the reality of it. These days, I hardly do cardio yet I shred out for competition -- simply by tightening up on the TYPE of food I consume.
Food for though.
