A protein shake before bed is a must for anyone who wants to gain muscle. When you sleep you do not eat for 6 to 8 hours depending how long you sleep. During that time liver glycogen drops and makes fuel for your brain. When liver glyocogen falls to a certain level muscle is broken down into glucose. You need a slow digesting protein that your body can feed off through the night. Pop a bunch of slow releasing amino acid tabs along with a 50g of casein protein shake. Remember at night is when your muscles actually grow, so provide them with the building blocks they need. Also, drink a protein shake immediately upon waking in the morning to keep your body from being in a catabolic state. I've even heard of pro's who set their alarms at night to get up and have a protein shake.

Cottage cheese. Milk protein, best on earth bar none. Releases slowly, and gives you more "substance" than a shake.

I have cottage cheese before bed or a shake with Casein protien powder blended with no fat yogurt and water before bed. I also wake up automatically around 3 AM and have another shake. Works for me.

In my case, it's Cheese (4% fat or less), white eggs, slow digesting protein shake or even turkey (since i eat chicken all day long... it gives my a break ;D) But the important thing is that i need to eat before bed... as Paindevine summarized it very well
And Max... Thank you... i now fell the need to drink a big glass of milk ;D

Although, I always ate some kind of protein before bed. I now include some complex carbs so my body doesnt use the protein for fuel. I wonder how much the average persons metabolism slows down while they are asleep compared to a bodybuilders metabolism.

I cant answer your question about the metabolism, but i can tell you that i too eat a bit of slow digesting carbs before night when i'm off season: First, i believe in that stategie and second… i cant go to bed without my bowl of oat cereal! ;D (… i think that i rather eat that than pizza ;D )

But doesn't your body tend to convert carbs into fat if you eat them less then two hours before bed?

But doesn't your body tend to convert carbs into fat if you eat them less then two hours before bed? Danman, the right amout of carbs to take before bed is hard to find, but with time (trial) you will know how many carbs (approx) you need before bed. The mix of a bit of carbs and proteins will help you add muscle mass without adding fat (or just a bit... but in off season i think that it's not a problem if it allows you to add muscle mass. So that's why i'm not doing it on pre contest diet) Mo (For exemple, at 215 lb off season, i eat an average of 40g of protein + 60g of carbs before bed... and on a pre contest diet i eat an average of 30g of proteins + 0 carbs)
