.. that most of you probably went through many years ago.
We get our video rentals from netflix.com . I'm a happy customer. DVDs come in the mail. Today I opened the envelope to find one just for me.
Pumping Iron.
I am about to see it for the first time - this weekend at the latest.

You`ll love it and you will definately workout harder after seeing it.
Look for me in the beginning of the movie as a long -haired kid applauding Mike Katz while he`s onstage.
You`d never recognize me. ;D
Great flick!!

Tim, never knew you were a movie star! Will have to watch it again and look for you. The film is a classic and a definitive documentary on the sport. The scenes with Arnold and Lou were super.
Would also recommend PI II, The Women. Bev Francis shook the sport to the ground, as no female before her had such extreme muscularity. The contrast between Bev and Rachel McLish was like night and day. Gave judges a real dilemma. Today, Rachel would probably have won Figure Olympia.

Here`s one of the 5 pics I have from Pumping Iron, starring yours truly!! I`m the dorky looking kid with long hair parted on the side in the button up maroon shirt. My then training partner ,Ray Harris is the black kid to the left of the pic in the blue sweater.we were powerliftiners/bodybuilders back then. The other shot`s are too similar to warrant posting ,not that thios one does, ;D but they are either me sitting,or me clapping for Mr. America Mike Katz who is onstage at the time. I give you all your laugh for the day! Enjoy!! ;D

WireNWood - did we ever get your initial impression of Pumping Iron? I was looking forward to your review. I remember me and a buddy going to the afternoon showing back in 1977 of Pumping Iron, it hit us so hard we stayed right through the following showing of it as well!

Tim, like or not, you are part of Pumping Iron history and folklore. You, therefore, have earned the right to feel and act smug. ;D

OK - well, since you asked. Remeber that I've warned you before - I think too much. It was, of course, VERY inspiring seeing those men and their incredible development. Seeing these guys in moving pictures made them more real to me. These revered names had previously only been seen in stills. Now I have seen them laughing, eating, hugging their children, riding on a bus, and walking across the street. It makes them seem so much more like me - and THAT part gives me a huge jolt, because it removes excuses. Excuses that I didnt' even realize I harbored. Hearing Arnold @ age 27 talk I was impressed with what a sharp mind he obviously has, to go along with his determination. I loved the childhood photos of him - especially one where he was sitting at the dinner table and he looked sooooo skinny. I remember thinking that Poppa Ferrigno (Maddie?) wasn't much of a coach... which brings me to the part where I think too much. The disc also had "The Making of Pumping Iron". It revealed some of the ways that things in PI had been given the Hollywood treatment, proving once again that even when Hollywood calls something a "documentary" it is full of lies. It was intentionally made to look like Lou always trained in a dark basement while Arnold was always in the sunshine surrounded by adoring crowds...etc, etc. I think they really made Lou look like an idiot child and did so on purpose. We seldom heard him say a complete sentence, but they let us hear him grunt and yell a lot. I can almost hear the director saying "If you want to be in this movie, Lou, when your Dad speaks just stare and the floor and nod your head." By the end of PI I was tempted to believe that Lou really is just a big dull-minded meathead, and of course when you hear him speak without a director telling him what to do it is obvious that he is not. He isn't nearly as magnetic as Arnold, but he's certainly not the dimwit they make him out to be. The poor guy was young and looking for some fame... he got some of that. More power to him, I guess. Of course, this is just one of the ways the fillm was fictionalized. There are more and I'm sure you're all plenty familiar with them. Anyway, I know I'm rehashing stuff that's all been said before almost 30 years ago, and I'll get down off my soapbox now. You asked. Yes, watching those guys definately was a HUGE boost to my desire-to-improve.

No I still talk to Ray Harris once in a while though. It`s pretty early but I`ll post some thoughts on Harris who I thought could have gone as far as he wanted to in either bodybuilding or powerlifting.
Never saw Waller but saw Katz in his prime many times.I still see him today as he MC`s a lot of contests that I`ve been in.
Mike is really a great guy!
