So I'm not cutting or anything but still I find it very very difficult to try to eat clean and not drink because I know if I do I am not helping my gains at all, and potentially hurting them. I can't just sit back and have a glass of water. I'm not saying I'm a drunk or anything but I do enjoy 1-2 beers at social settings., of course I try to get something low cal like Mich Ultra.
As far as foods go if I do eat out and try to get fresh veggies rather than fries or coleslaw. And of course, no pop/soda. I am getting more discplined now tho refusing cake/cookies if I'm at a luncheon at work or if I am out dining with friends.
Do you guys have any tricks?

Guzzling tons of Diet Coke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL. I actually remember taking food along on dates with me in tupperware bowls when I was compeating, not exactly "Mr. Excitement," but hey the gals never complained!!!!!! Now on a serious tip, protein bars are a great way to keep yourself from eating what you are not supposed to. They are easy to take along, and if you have one with a large glass of Diet Coke it can actually be filling. Also, try salads, but ALWAYS ask for oil and viniger ON THE SIDE and add it yourself!!! Most commercial dressings are loaded with fat. I don't where you are posting from, but most restaurants and fast food places have at least ONE thing that you can eat if you are not getting ready for a show. Diet is a HUGE part of bodybuilding, so stay strong and don't "slide," most friends and family will come to understand what you are doing and you won't feel like a "wet blanket" at the get togeathers. It depends of one thing only: Your motivation! So going to social events while trying to eat clean is not easy, but if you want it badly, you'll be able to do it! But that being said, i very like sicario's suggestions: Diet coke, relatively clean restaurant meal, etc. Fallowing a specific diet planning could also motivate you to eat BEFORE and AFTER the social event! Or why not… forget about social life ;D it's better to be fit and alone than fat and with friends! (Just kidding of course!) Good luck Jay!

I can`t begin to tell you how many times I was at a dinner or at a holiday get together where I was dieting for a contest and had people telling me to "eat just one, or take a small peice it won`t hurt you,you aren`t fat" !! LOL Without sugar coating it,you have to want to make progress or see results from your efforts,more than you want to eat the goodies. Discipline,resolve,focus,and the determination/desire to suceed is the best motivator for me !! Set goals,and acheive them no matter what people say................anybody can look like sh*t,thats easy,but it takes effort and desire to look great...........thats not so easy,but much better!!

Just treat your goals seriously... I pick 1 day a week to splurge. If its not that day than forget it. Or I may just switch days for that week.

Well guys I have made it a goal to cut out beer completely. If I do go out with friends I will get a diet coke or something. I mean, I will help the gains and save money., can't go wrong there. As far as food, just avoid sweets/cake/cookies and for meals have lean cuts of meat (chicken, fish), and of course no bread/rolls and no dessert. It's not like I go out alot, maybe 2-3 nights a week max, but I have to make it count.

Mo I know you said that you were kidding about the "better to be fit and alone than fat and with friends," but I really like that statement, and I think that it rings true!!!! I have been doing this since I was 15, and I hit the big 40 this month, and I think that a lot of times it actually comes down to that. I get a lot of trainee's who are pressured by so called "friends" to eat drink and be merry on the weekends, and I try to explain to them that "real" friends let you do your thing and don't try and change you. As Tim mentioned, I too, have dieted during holidays, birthdays, weddings, and you name it. My real friends understood that and didn't pressure me, which is what friendship is all about. I always explain to a trainee that bodybuilding, as life itself boils down to "priorities." Which get's me back to Mo's comment about being in shape and alone or fat with friends. Bodybuilding is all about sacrafice and goal setting, you have to decide what You want for You, and never stray from that plan. In bodybuilding you just can't "have your cake and it it too." If you want to look like a bodybuilder you have to "live" like one, if you want to look "normal" than "live" like a normal person. There is no third option my friend. Sicario.

If you ever get a chance , buy David Sidaris' book "Me Talk Pretty Now" documenting his attempt to relocate to France. Parts of it can be read on the Esquire magazine website. Back on the topic. I pre-feed. Eat my normal meals and if I need too, move the main meal up a bit so i go to a function with a full tummy and am not tempted. Most party food makes me physically ill anyway. Brock

But i'm from Montreal (Canada) so it would be a 12h plane trip or a 210 days swimming trip to reach Europe and train! ;D PS: If someday i have the honor to train at your gym... you would not need to buy more weight... because i would just try to adapt and do higher reps sets ;D

Here is what helps me when I'm out: Now this is hopefully not going to sound vain, egotistical, mean or whatever but here is what I do. I have NUMEROUS times been at a restaurant deciding what to order- --- Chili's is my weakness (I don't know if those are everywhere- to those who don't know it's a burger, etc joint). Bacon Cheeseburgers are my weakness...so is their "awesome blossom" with is essentially a big deep fried onion. Now.. they have some healthy items on their "guiltless gill" menu.. So I'm sitting there pondering.. do I want the chicken tacos, ordered PLAIN or do I want to splurge and order the burger. When this dilemma or lack of self control begins to hit I LOOK AROUND THE RESTAURANT..... see what some of the folks there are eating and what they look like. THAT, my friend motivates me right there to pick the healthy choice.
This will work too when your buddies are having beers and you want one- take a look at them and then at yourself and think "who would I rather want to look like".
... As Randy aka MostMuscular would say... ".. 'nuff said". ;D

'nuff said". ;D You know Big Mike, you may be right, mabye it is egotistical or vein on our part, but the bottom line is just that you can't eat "CRAP" and look like a bodybuilder!!!!!!! (a lot of times I really wish that we could, LOL). We are constantly forced to make choices in our daily lives "do I eat the pizza or have abs?" "Do I have the birthday cake, or have abs?" Do I drink beer, or have abs?" For example. And I think you are right, if you look at the people who do these things, their body almost always (except for the VERY few genetically gifted) reflects the choices that they make. Unfortunalty, bodybuilding is a sport where you simply can't have your cake (literally, LOL) and eat it too. I work with all kinds of athleates (soccer players, kick boxers, boxers, football players, ect) and I can tell you without a doubt, the athleate who is in the best shape, BAR NONE, is always the bodybuilder who is "ON." Bodybuilding, like life itself, all boils down to choices which are based on personal priorities, Sicario.
