Just curious what you all eat after a weights/cardio workout while you are cutting. I'm guessing lots of protein and some carbs to replenish energy supply. I'm thinking protein shake with peanut butter and a baked potato. You get your protein, fat (good fat) and carbs.

Whey Isolate and BCAA's or Whey Isolate on its own

Beckie,
Whey Isolate is very expensive isn't it? I know most protein powders are whey concentrate (what I use.. the big cheap 5lb tub of protein)., whereas isolate is a "purer" protein, has better synthesis but is costlier? By BCAA's is that another supplement you use?
Ruby,
Heh that's my pre bedtime meal, never thought about trying it after a workout. I'll have to try that one.

I use the isolate because my gut can't tolerate the concentrate-it is more expensive but the health benefit is better for me. BCAA is Branch Chain amino acids-good for preserving muscle pre contest. I only use it then as I get enough cals off season Dextrose is also better offseason for me due to the high carb content.

I haven't had to cut in years. But next summer I'll actually have to get on the treadmill. As far as my post-workout meal, cutting or bulking, it's always the same. This is the time of day that you can load your body with what it needs, and not have to worry about losing cuts or screwing up your diet. Mine, as everyone always laughs when I tell them this, is 15 pieces of KFC chicken strips! All chicken, though it's breaded, and all protein. I like it, and it does the job. Of course, everyone thinks my arteries are clogged, but I disagree. I'm so damn active that on a daily basis I must eat 5,000-5500 calories to maintain weight.

As for Youngblood, the post workout meal is the last one that will be cut in a pre contest diet! But i need to admit it, i dont eat KFC… but 55g of isolate protein and 45 to 60 g of Gatorade powder! Huuuum, it's the best moment of the day on a cutting diet!

Whoa whoa KFC, Gatorade while CUTTING? Wow, you guys must have mad high metabolisms. I can understand the body is depleated of nutrients after a workout (especially weights AND cardio), but why simple carbs like Gatorade? It has electrolytes, true, and I can see why you want carbs for the insulin spike to promote muscle growth with the protein but while cutting wouldn't it be better to consume complex carbs? Again, not trying to argue but I'm wondering why you'd go with simple carbs after a workout while cutting.
Another thing I want to add, isn't there a two step process to the post workout meal. For example, right after the workout consume carbs and protein, but just something small, like a protein shake and some sort of juice maybe. THEN, like 30 mins later you consume the big meal, that would consist of protein, fats and good carbs.

You know, a lot of people try to make things a lot more scientific than they should. Really, just eat. You want KFC, go for it. Gatorade with BCAA's and whey, just do it. THe bottom line is you really need to just get SOMETHING in you, and it's better to get protein and some carbs in you, than nothing at all, or to eat birthday cake. No need to make things complicated. Of course, a lot of people are going to tell you to have a small shake, then eat a large meal or something like that. Some will tell you to drink ground up horse testicles. Just eat. Like I tell Max, about training and his eating. Just eat. Put your time in. No need to worry about what your eating till the last few weeks of a contest diet (I'm being vague here). Just make sure your eating, and the scale is going in the right direction of where you want it to go. If your getting fatter than you'd like, back off on calories. If your not getting as big as you want as fast as you would like, then add some more calories in. It doesn't need any scientific mumbo-jumbo like your trying to land on the moon.

45-50g protein and some carbs. Gram amount depends on how many grams of carbs i am aloud for the day...My carbs come from either whole grain oats and white rice or rice cakes..

Right after I go with 45-50grams whey w/ 50g dextrose. An hour later its protein pancakes from the recipe section. 10 whites, ½ cup oats, cinnamon, 3-4 blueberries for color. Add a little spray butter and s.f. syrup and your good to go. On high carb days I might go with a cup of oats but damn these things are so good. I’m hooked!

Dieting for my show I did protein and fat post workout. Whey and natty peanut butter. I did teh same for my first show with good results. For my last show I used white rice and whey For the one I'm prepping for, I'm using whey and waxy maize starch I've had great results with each. I've also had good results with using brown rice and sweet potatos post workout. My only recommendation is that you NOT mix carbs and fat post workout. If you want to stick w/ the protein/fat mix do that. If you want carbs, use whey and carbs NO FAT. The fat will slow down the aborption rate of the whey and carbs. Also the fat will lower IGF.

Mystic79, the reason for simple carbs post workout is you want to get your insulin to spike at that time to drive the amino acids and carbs into the muscles asap to facilitate recovery. YB is correct post workout carbs havn't been shown in all the research I've read to cause a gain in bodyfat. Also a good time to through in a serving of creatine!
