what happens if your calories are neither in bulking or cutting mode..but in maintainance...
but you keep working out?
Does your muscle change in anyway or does it just stay the way it is?

If you are in 'maintenance' mode calorie wise your muscles can still get stronger if you are lifting progressively heavier weights.

so what is the point of a bodybuilder staying in maintainance mode before their contest....why not keep trying to get heavier in the off season than the year before?

I thinks its more a matter of giving your body a break every now and then,so you avoid injury or overtraining...

I don't know if a bodybuilder ever really enters in a "maintainance mode" in the off season and doesn't try and gain any muscle. I think just about every one is ALWAYS trying to add a few more pounds of muscle in the off season, even if were are talking about it being under 5 pounds. If, however, you did find one who was not trying to get bigger in the off season, it could be one of the shorter guys (like me, LOL), who has pretty much "topped off" and can't add more weight and stay in his weight class. I equate it to only being able to pour x amount of water in a "small glass." You can get a whole lot more liquid to fit in a big glass than a smaller one, it's the same with bodybuilding. It's a lot harder (but not impossible) for a guy who's 5'7 to look good at 230 than it is for a guy who is 6'2!!!!!!!!!!!! Vin.

I don`t like the term "maintaining my physique",but periodization, where training intensity is backed down a notch or two after long bouts of hard training, will keep you in shape, and due to the fact that certain aspects such as intensity, volume, poundage, and training frequency are all lowered, the body may even grow due to being able to recover more efficiently. Everyone should alternate times of intense training, with slightly less intense training alternated at various time periods depending on your goal(s) at that time. You simply cannot go all out,all of the time!!
