I just read your article in Ironlife Magazine online and I wish it was published in every magazine remotely connected to sports, health or training. That article pulled me to this forum.
I'm a professional kickboxer and I lift heavy, because my first introduction to a gym was by a champion powerlifter. Today, at the age of 33, I'm very much in my prime. Many want to know where I get my power from and I tell them how I lift - heavy bench presses, dead lifts and the heavy snatches, etc.
I'm amazed at people spending hours in the gym, 3-4 times a week and get NO results after months! When I say "Because you don't train - you play!", they don't get it. They are following instructor's instructions! "Cause todays instructors know squat. I actually had this skinny instructor in the gym tell me that I should reduce my weight and lift more "correctly" and longer sets. So I asked him what his sport is. "I'm a marathon runner." I'm not going to write what I told him, but IS THIS THE GYMS OF TODAY??
Goodness, we have girls with jewellery and make up in the gyms (not breaking a sweat of course) and sissy boys who stare in the mirrors more than they train!
I started some time ago to train 2 kickboxers for the pro-circuit. They said that they were in shape. So I put them on a toned down version of my fitness routine. One week later, the one was in bed and the other went to see his doctor!!
We are in different worlds.
What we used to do in hardcore gyms don't exist any more.
Hey, guys, its not the tattoo that makes you tough, its not the fancy equipment or the "new advanced" technique that makes you strong. Its the HEART and BALLS you put in your training!
In fighting sports - if you make a mistake - you don't loose points - you loose teeth!! And guys look at me like I'm from another planet when I grunt a lift big and sweat like a pig.
Thanks
