For any of you readers out there who have read my reviews, will know that I am a devote follower of the sport of bodybuilding. As I grew older and stopped competing, I looked towards other competitive outlets. I tried power lifting as well as highland games “heavy athletics,” of which I really enjoyed. They were fun as well as interesting to participate in. I also started watching many of the “world strongest men,” events on ESPN. I also had the great fortune of visiting “The York Barbell Museum,” in York Pennsylvania. As I walked through the museum, I realized that the “Iron” sport has a long and colorful history. Not just men like Pearl and Grimik, or Reeves and Scott, but men like Sandow, and Sig Klein, and Hackenschmidt. Strong men of old, who commanded respect wherever they appeared. It was at this moment that I knew I was part of something unique, an Iron Fraternity so to speak. A fraternity that no matter what the sport, weightlifting, power lifting, arm wrestling, strong man, bodybuilding, ect, was performed by men not satisfied to just compete, but an inner desire to push their bodies to the limit, and beyond; the truest form of competition, to compete against one’s self!
There is a man who lives in Scotland who promoted many Strongman contests, as well as pioneered the sport itself. That man is Dave Webster. Many may not know of Dave, but Dave is a man who truly loves the “Iron Sports.” He has an extensive collection of books, magazines, newspapers, medals, sculptures, trophies, banners, and memorabilia of the history of the iron sports. From old equipment like Kettle bells, to the old time chest expanders, to actual railroad spikes that were bent by strong men of old; Dave appears to have it all! This man has spent his life collecting and preserving the artifacts of our unique world. Imagine owning the very first “Iron man” magazine! Or courses on how to build strength written by Sandow!
The good news is that you don’t have to travel to Scotland and see Dave himself to see these things. GMV has just converted its vhs tape of Dave’s museum to dvd. I recently viewed it. This is not a workout tape. This is not a tape you may want to watch while riding the bike or doing cardio. This is a dvd that will help you appreciate just how far we have come, and just how important our past is. If you look back on the 20th century and long for those times in which members of our sport were treated with respect and awe, then this dvd is for you. Dave’s collection is both rare and important. Its important for us to know that our past is preserved and that we as athletes come from a colorful history of over 100’s in age! That strong men, and power lifters, and bodybuilders and weightlifters, are all truly brothers and sisters! Watching this dvd made me feel the same way I did when I visited the York Museum.
There is some bonus footage for those who want to see some action. In 1966 Dave filmed (on 16mm film) the World Olympic Weighlifting Championships, in Berlin Germany. There is no sound or captions, but watching these men clean and jerk, or press incredible poundage’s is inspiring, especially at that time when steroid use was in its infancy. You know you are watching true strength!
