... December is the time of the years to plan my pre contest diet and training! All right, i'm so eager : No ice cream, no chocolate, no brown rice (haha) ;D ... Seriously i always been the kind of guy that dosent have to do cardio to get lean for my contest, i only change my caloric intake (I think that it's better that way for natural atlete with a medium-fast metabolism). But i heard a lot of time that keeping you caloric higher and adding more cardio can help to keep the muscle while dieting! I'M not searching for the miracle answer here... but i only want to know what method do you or you friends use to get lean and keeping muscle (even if you dont compete). Let prepare ours abs for the summer Mo

But i heard a lot of time that keeping you caloric higher and adding more cardio can help to keep the muscle while dieting! That's exactly right....especially if you're natural.

Intensity, I'm one of those guys that if I just cut my calorie intake I loose a lot of muscle. The cardio and small calorie changes have worked best for me. Small changes such as making one particular meal different for a week or two

Thank for your comment xena But dont you think that adding cardio to your regular training can tax your body too much? I mean, if we keep in mind that the objective is to retain muscle mass... (and not only reducing bodyfat) In fact, i asked that question because i heard so many differents theories on that at the Gym and on Internet (musclemayhem). Maybe that is the best sign that everyone react differently... but lets see what is the proportion on each method! So please, lets continu the servey... Mo

And even if some persons say that it is a myth... let me ask the question : The cardio doesent seems to affect negatively the mass of your legs? So... Diet + Cardio believer: 2 Only diet believer : 1 (my vote... but lets see if i will stay on that team if nobody fallow me ;D) Mo

Mo Yes, you definitely can overdo the cardio, I've been very guilty of that, and lost muscle in the process. Also I've heard so many theories on whether it's better to do short bursts of HIIT cardio, or longer and slower cardio, I think you have to experiment and see what works the best for YOU. But I would at least do moderate cardio during your cutting to keep your metabolism from dropping too much with the dieting.

Mo In my case, no it didn't affect my leg size dramatically (I didn't notice much so I don't think it did) Of course my legs did get smaller leaning out both ways. Honestly Mo, when I did the food only route I got very small.

I agree about the excesive cardio and muscle loss, especially in the quads for me, which is a big no no, since they have always been a glaring weakpoint. I`m changing my plan a bit this year, but if you want to retain size, double up on your protein, carb cycle,do HIIT cardio for 15-20 minutes, 4-6 days a week, depending on your condition from the start of your prep. I have always done a lot of cardio pre-contest, but this year I will start by walking on an inclined treadmill, increasing days, and duration, for about 5 weeks, then I will go to my HIIT cardio on the Eliptical, for X amount of days..... depending on how I look at this time. As I get harder, I will cut back on the cardio, and rely more on training and diet, where as in the past, I would have added more, or longer periods of cardio to get harder...................I lost too much size this way. I plan on being in the best condition of my life this year at 50, and of course all this is subject to change, addording to how my body responds during the course of my prep !! It look`s good on paper though...we`ll see! Train hard!!

I never thought about that...not doing cardio..but instead let your metabolism, muscles, and working out in the gym burn all the fat off.

Ifearnoman: Thank for the good wordsm (if "sick" is a good word ;D). Yes, that's a pic of me... edition of the last may 1st at the East of Canada WNSO show (musclemania). I'm 6' and i competed in the light-heavy class. Tim: Great suggestion... i think that i will try it. It's not to radical and it seems to combine the advantages of both methods. (Is that politiquely correct if y told you that "i respect your experience? ) Maximum6: For the past two years... that method worked well for me! If you metabolism is fast... i think it's can be a great way to keep muscle while reducing bodyfat. Mo

Most people do thing in reverse or in tandem: they start dieting first then add cardio, or they just start doing both right away. Big mistake. You should add your cardio to your routine about 2-3 weeks before you start cutting your calories/carbs. In many cases, just adding 3-6 cardio sessions of moderate to high interval intensity is all that is needed to get things done, that way you only have to make minor reductions in calories (like 200) until you start dropping fat again.
Most people try to do both at the same time, and initially you lose fat, but then suddenly everything stops. What variable do you play with now? Add more cardio or drop the calories? Again, most just take the shotgun approach and increase the cardio and drop the calories and wonder why they are burning muscle and not fat.
Start with the cardio first and continue to eat your regular offseason program, but eat cleaner calories for about 2-3 weeks. My guess is that just adding in 3-6 sessions a week is all that you will need to get the ball rolling, then when fat loss slows, THEN you can start cycling your carbs down, and vary them every other day.
