Cook's Class ?
The prejudging of the 2004 NPC Men's Nationals is in the record books and the man who may very well have the most to lose could wind up with the greatest gain of his competitive career.
Under the watchful eye of nutrition expert Chris Aceto, two-time USA Superheavyweight class winner Chris Cook has undergone a dramatic transformation, and hitting the stage at a shredded 248 pounds looks to have finally fulfilled the promise that has hung like an albatross from his neck the past two years.
Overall, the Superheavyweight class is the strongest it's been in years, with Jerome Ferguson, Bill Wilmore, and Marcus Haley all nailing their condition. Ferguson is nothing less than Sergio-like, with the most dramatic V-taper in the entire show. Wilmore is dry and cut, and Haley is incredibly thick and dense. The surprise of the evening for many was when the four men comprising the first callout of the Supers turned to be compared in the mandatory rear double biceps shot. In the past this would have spelled trouble for Cook. But so improved is his back that he more than held his own and may have even won the pose.
The Heavyweight class was less stellar than the Superheavies but did feature several standouts, most notably Capriese Murray and Grigori Atoyan. Perennila competitor Gus Carter made the first callout and still impresses with his amazingly wide and thick back.
The Light-Heavyweight class is turning into a tightly contested affair with a first callout that included Nate Wonsley, Randolph Chaney II, Roc Rashid, and Aaron Garza. Garza, like Cook, has made major improvements since the USA's and seems to be in contention for the for the top spot in his class. Rashid brought a sizable cheering section who will surely do their best to sway the judges tomorrow night.
The Middleweight class features a wide variety of excellent physiques that was highlighted by a first callout of six- Tricky Jackson, Eryk Bui, Garrett Allin, Blas Reinaldo Montalvo, Anthony Watkins and Stan McQuay. Bui's thickness sets him apart from the rest of the crowd and his conditioning may be enough to see him through to victory. McQuay's shape and Allin's conditioning should also put them in contention for top honors. Montalvo has possibly the thickest biceps in the show.
The Lightweight class is unexpectedly deep- 26 athletes strong and not a subpar physique among them. The first callout included Patrick Richardson, Rey Ronquillo, Perry McRae, Leonardo Ortiz and Leonardo Pacheco.
The Bantamweight class features 17 competitors, four of which made the first callout. They were Steven Burke, who won this class at the USA's, Randy Jackson, Sr., Robert E. Lee and Heath Warren.
