This journal picks up where my original journal left off. After most of a year dieting down, I really need to focus on putting on quality lean mass over the next couple of years. I will be keeping the diet much the same, clean, lean sources of protein carbs, minimal added fat. I'll do one cheat meal a week. I'm starting at 168lbs this morning. I'll slowly be adding carbs back into the diet until I'm gaining .5-1.5lbs max per week. I get fat easily despite keeping active, so I will keep this pace slow and hopefully steady. I'm returning to PRRS principles, however, I'll likely add some saturation work, especially on the power days to make sure I'm really getting in the intensity and training to failure.

Also in this journal, I am going to occasionally comment on or refer you to something I found interesting or inspiring that may or may not have anything to do with working out. Look at it as an occasional blog of topics that give me focus, earn my excitement, keep my interest. All traits I try to bring into the gym. I hope you don't mind my using up some bandwidth for this. For those that follow along, I hope you find some small worthwhile contribution to your day. Random Bits #1: Inspiring WritingTwo items. First, I read a lot of magazines. Mostly they help pass the miles and miles of cardio. I read a wide range but appreciate most those that embrace the best in us and do so with good writing. Take this article in the current Men's Vogue Auto EroticDoes anyone need a $1.7 million super-car that can outrun a hurricane?I've been a fan of LA Time's writer Dan Neil for some time. Dan's a keen observer of our culture, a frequently funny writer and he knows his wheels. His review of the Bugatti Veyron starts strong: Trees. Sun. Bridge. House. Guardrail. The Sicilian piedmont blurs in one long incomprehensible gout of liquid reality...treesunbridgehouseguardrail... The Bugatti Veyron bellows at 205 mph down the island's main autostrada. A deep aortic throb registers between my shoulder blades. I haven't blinked for, like, 10 minutes — I'm Keir Dullea in 2001. The truth is, I've driven this fast before, but never in a street car, never on a public road, and absolutely never on a cracked, sun-buckled hunk of weaving motorway like this. If I crash, the Sicilian highway department can expect a very strongly worded letter from me.But the turn of phrase that has stuck with me for days is how Dan describes realizing that, at 200mph, he hasn't even scratched the Bugatti's reserves: I glance at the alloy-bezel blackface gauge indicating reserve horsepower. I have another 500 hp available, approximately one whole Dodge Viper. This hardly seems possible. Tightening my grip on the hand-stitched leather wheel, I roll on the throttle. Then the car does an unexpected and celestial thing. It downshifts. At over 200 mph, it downshifts from seventh to sixth gear, and as it does an eerie force is summoned from mysterious precincts within the enormous eight-liter engine. My breastbone gets heavy against my lungs. The landscape carousels a twitch quicker. Two-ten, 215 mph. Oh, yes, this car is fast."...the car does an unexpected and celestial thing."What a wonderful and immediately understandable turn of words. Celestial. How better to immediately evoke the sensation of a car in seventh gear, coasting at 200mph, dipping down for another gulp of horsepower? Brilliant. The other bit of writing is a scene between Daniel Plainview and his "step-brother" Henry in the just-out on DVD There Will be Blood. Plainview, who let's few into his head and fewer into his heart, finally opens up to his new found sibling. Transcribing it here does no justice to this almost Shakespearean scene on film; I strongly recommend you get the film, tune-out the distractions, turn down the lights and soak up this brief duet: Plainview: Are you an angry man, Henry? Henry Brands: About what? Plainview: Are you envious? Do you get envious? Henry Brands: I don't think so. No. Plainview: I have a competition in me. I want no one else to succeed. I hate most people. Henry Brands: That part of me is gone... working and not succeeding- all my failures has left me... I just don't... care. Plainview: Well, if it's in me, it's in you. There are times when I look at people and I see nothing worth liking. I want to earn enough money that I can get away from everyone. Henry Brands: What will you do about your boy? Plainview: I don't know. Maybe it will change. Does your sound come back to you? I don't know. Maybe no one knows that. A doctor might not know that. Henry Brands: Where is his mother? Plainview: I don't want to talk about those things. I see the worst in people. I don't need to look past seeing them to get all I need. I've built my hatreds up over the years, little by little, Henry... to have you here gives me a second breath. I can't keep doing this on my own with these... people. Day-Lewis' line could have been "I'm very competitive. I have to win." And wuold have come off like any athlete in a post-game interview. Instead, he gives us I have a competition in me. I want no one else to succeed. Superb.

This looks amazing. By the way bro. Let's just go steal that car. Eff the rules of society. We need that car!
Haha, I can't wait to see the amount of destruction that you are going to leave laying in the ruins that follow your path behind you. And the creation that comes of it all.
May the light shine down on you, so you can look up with clear eyes and see the dreams you set forth to do battle with. For your time is here and this fight is begining.

Randy, James, Joel, THANKS! You are all so personally inspiring. I have a long hill to climb but I also have forever to get there. How far I get will be solely about focus and dedication and overcoming whatever obstacles may come along the way.
Knowing that I have all of you to consult with is priceless.

I highly recommend "Weapons of Mass Constrction" by Drs. Chris Mohr and Greg Bradley-Popovich. Excellent read with some great meal plans too! Also, when it comes time to cut, Dr, Mohr also wrote "Human Inferno". ANother great read.

Workout/ diet look great! I see you're still keeping the carbs kinda low. I'm going very slow, adding in 40g a day every week or two, starting from where I just bottomed out. It will be many weeks before the weight starts going up, I'd think. So I guess I'm in transition phase for a while.

As a follow-up to Random Bit #1, here's a link back to Bugatti's model history. And Bugatti's business in general.

Random Bits #2We all look forward to a good cheat meal... and while I'm happy at the local burger joint with a big plate of fries and a beer, I love eating out well, at fine restaurants. I'm also busy and find the free service at Open Table a lifesaver. Open Table is not available everywhere but grows larger every day and is in most major cities and may foreign countries. You can make reservations online without having to contact the restaurant. Choose the place and time you want and see if they have seats or just name a time and they'll show the restaurants available at that time. You earn points every time you use the service.
