I give big Gene his props, that sets the standard. There will be at least 2 other guys I believe in the next year to also break this barrier. Mendy and Kennelly, also dont rule out Lattmier. -powerhouse

My question is about all the support gear that these guys are using: bench shirts/denim shirts, elbow braces, powersuits. I knew a guy at my old gym that used to wear a really think one and told me that it took 405 just to get the bar all the way down to his chest because of the tension in these shirts. 405? So if your shirt can withstand 405 on it's own (and yes I understand the shirt doesn't do the benching for you) how can you call a 1000 lb bench press legit. To me it's like saying I loaded springs on the the back of my legs so that when my calves came down in a leg press, I was able to crack out 2500 like Ron Coleman.
What's the point? Personal opinion: unless it's raw (at max the use of a belt for abdominal pressure) it's thanks to the equipment.

I agree Aaron,me and Fenris have discussed this in the past and I think he agrees also.
Still a lot of weight to even hold/support but theres no way in hell anyone is benching over 750 tops rw and that`s being conservative on my part and talking about an extremely gifted man who is just a natural bencher who traned his balls off for years.
Powerlifting ain`t what it used to be when I copmpeting and should be called who can lift the most weight while using a crane for assist,or who can squat the most if they put a gianyt spring under their ass?
Just telling it like it is ala Howard Cosell.

Powerlifting ain`t what it used to be like how you used to have to walk 30 miles uphill in a blinding snowstorm just to get to the meet? ;D

Just supporting 1000 is a feat in itself, let alone pressing it. Slate magazine had a pretyy balanced look at Rychlak, Kennelly and bench shirts a while ago. slate.msn.com/id/2104915/

By no means am I knocking these guys for their sport, ours is more fruity than theirs, I wonder how long it will be before hydrolic jacks are introduced to help lifters "find their true inner strength".

A 1005 pound bench is an incredible feat even with the aid of a bench shirt. It is kind of odd though that the deadlift and squat records haven't increased as much over the years as the bench press record has increased. I am sure this is due to advances in the bench shirt these guys wear.
I have seen 2 or 3 guys literally hanging off of a bench shirt to get it on someone. They had to baby powder the hell out of the guy to get it on him. The thing was so tight, looked the the wearers head was going to explode.
Forget that. I will stick with my puny weights.

A bench shirt is to bench pressing as knee wraps are to the squat. Enables the lifter to do alot more weight then they could without them. Knee wraps though can serve a purpose in making squats easier on the knees. Imagine you have a 50 inch chest and you squeeze into a shirt for a 30 inch chest. That is a bench shirt.
