I am at a standstill right now. I am a graphic designer and have been with this place for a little over a year. I HATE IT. Absolutely dread it. The catch, they pay very well. The other side, theres no quality of life. On call pretty much 24/7 because we are a small boutique firm. I cant stand it. I want to leave but do not have any options. At 24 this is not an issue i should be dealing with.
Do you guys have any advice? I could really use some.
Thanks

What would it take to make this the ideal position for you? Does this company have a history of hiring someone and expecting to burn them out and be replaced? Would they be open to feedback about stress free time? I would start with an evaluation along these lines.

The company used to outsource their work to a Freelancer. The freelancer has an entire team of people working for him but they make more money billing my time to clients. But i have to make up all the work myself with no other people to back me up. I am burnt out and just completely miserable here. I want out of this business all together but i dont know what else to do. The FDNY still has not called so i cant rely on that.

Sorry to hear. Is there another firm in your area you could consider? Or suggest that your employer hire another person to reduce workload to reasonable levels? Not an expert on this, just suggesting.

What else excites you? What do you really want to do?

Hey Steve:
Do you like Graphic Design? If so, look for another position elsewhere and take a cut in pay if necessary and if you're able if you think it's a better fit and doesn't have you working your a$$ off. I made a job change a few years ago and was working my a$$ off -- yes the pay and bonus was great.. but was not worth the time I lost with family and friends. My daughter went to her first roller skating party by herself, my wife shopped for christmas presents for my daughter and MY family by herself. I misssed out on a trip with some high school buddies of mine from way back... you get the idea.
Oh.. one more thing... if you get on with FDNY... can you send me a FDNY sweatshirt on the lowdown ;-) ?

I was thinking of something along the lines of a physical therapist. Working with people and having the satisfaction knowing that i am helping them.
and mike, if i get in the FDNY ill send you a dozen shirts
