For me this is memory lane, for others maybe not so.
In 1992, my wfie bought me a VIP ticket to see the Arnold Classic.
We went to columbus and I got a first hand idea of how big the pros really are.
I can remember meeting sooooo many people.
The expo was only about 15-20 booths!!
It was an awesome weekend.
Here are some highlights.
I got to meet Vince Taylor (the winner) Laura Creaville, SOnny Schmidt (my god was he wide), Renel Janvier, Milos Scarcev, Frank Hilldabrand, along with a young flex wheeler months away from his USA win, and a young Mike Francois.
But I also got to meet some of the old timers.
I sat and talked to Mr. Bill Pearl for 20-30minutes. He was still huge. I remember how big his delts where. He was wearing a white sweater and it was tight in all the right places, and of course loose around the waist. He was thick and wide. Although he didn't have the roundness and the pure density of the pros competing, he had more of a "real" build. What I mean is that he looked every bit like a real athlete/bodybuilder should.
We talked about training and routines. He talked of moderation, and not to get carried away with the current fads. And most of all consistancy. He also re-affirmed to me that can be a vegatarian and still grow tons of muscle.
I also met larry Scott. His arms were still over 22 inches. We also talked at great length about about training consistancy and the need to just keep at it.
I also got to meet the great Serge Nubret. The man was huge and tall. I expected him to be more like 5'11" and I think he was like 6'2".
Very quiet.
I also met one of my first idols. Sergio Oliva. He was enormous. Looking much like a retired bodybuilder. Not really hard, but big, as if that type of size will never go away. He looked tired sitting in his seat, but when I asked if I could take a pic with him, he graciously said he was there for us, and he didn't mind at all.
This was also the year that Arnold recognized Lee Haney for breaking his record for Olympia wins. Arnold was gracious as was Lee, it seemed that Arnold had no problem passing the torch so to speak.
This is why the guys from the 60's and 70's will always garner more respect from me then those of today.
I know things are different today then back then. I know the guys today are just as cool. But there is something about the muscle those guys built. It seems so much more long lasting then the guys today.
Gives me hope that my muscle is more long lasting, as long as I keep pounding it.
