One of W.O.T.W. favorite sons, Joel Preston, aka mrky03, is going to step on stage on October 11th for the Bluegrass Classic!
We already know about Joel's great lines and proportions, we also know he is doing his homeworks so he is going to be in top condition but what we dont know is... how do he feels? How do you approach these couple of days before the contest? Who is going to support you at the show? Tell us more about your preparations and the show itself!
Oh and... PICS PICS PICS!!!! :-)
Good luck Joel!

Joel is inspirational as an athlete and person. One of the kindest and most sincere people I've encountered, on or off line.
Go for it, Joel. Won't be surprised if you take the show. As Mo would say, Bonne chance!! ;D

Mo, Gerry you are too kind! I had the low carb blues big time today but I'm heading down the stretch for the Bluegrass Classic. It is sponsored by Richard "Tricky" Jackson IFBB Pro.
I feel like I'm ready to compete, just doing what I do up till contest time. Probably won't have as many supporters at this show as I will in Nov. but my wife "Tina" is always there for me!
I'm drinking as much water as I can though this preparation, at least 2 gallons a day and keeping my sodium intake reatively high up until the day before the show when I'll cut water back to about 1/3 of what I normally consume as well as cutting sodium back to normal levels but not out completely.
I promise I'll try to get some pics posted soon! You guys and gals know how hectic things get the closer you get to a show!

How is it today Joel? Are the low carb Blues gone? I know those mind games can be terrible during the last stretch to a show: Have I lost to much muscle mass? Am I lean enough? Should I keep the same carb up strategy than before? What about water, sodium? Where's my trunk? :-p
I like your last days plan Joel, very similar to my approach!
Tell us more about your routine? What song(s) will you use? Which muscle parts are mainly going to have the spot light? What,s going to be you on stage bodyweight? Favorite pose?
Ask Tina to take some pictures!
GO JOEL!!!

Haha! I actually have some pics taken, now I just have to get the software for our new camera installed on the computor so I can download them! I'm feeling really confident going into this show, I really think I'm in my best condition to date. I don't really have a specific bodypart to showcase. Maybe abs and serratus/intercostals?? I'm using the song Coming Undone by Korn. Its not my usual taste in music but I want to come out and hit it hard. They are giving away a best poser award at this show. I've won best poser awards years ago but I don't practice as much as I once did since the NPC doesn't seem to put any emphasis on the free posing at the evening show. Back in my old AAU days everything counted and the show wasn't over until they handed out the trophys! You guys know how it is the final days before a show. You wonder if you should deplete or not, carbup or not? Really though you are either ready or your not and I don't think drastic measures are going to help if you haven't done your homework! Right now I weigh about 198lbs. and have good seperation and vascularity. I know from years past if I cut sodium too severely right before the show my vascularity disapears and I have trouble getting a pump. So really I'm not going to do anything too much differently other than just cut down to normal levels of sodium, I'm been keeping it high intentionally and cutting back on water somewhat. I've been drinking over 2 gallons a day which for me is a lot! Keeps me running to the bathroom all day at work! If there is one thing I've figured out over the past 3 years, it is much easier getting into shape if I do it on a annual basis like I have been. I think your body gets used to burning fat if you eat clean year round and don't let yourself get too fat. I got up to about 210lb. this year which is probably a good off season weight for me. Last year I never got over 204 so I wasn't able to gain much size staying too lean. I'll keep you guys posted and hopefully have some pics up by tomorrow!

Proud of you, Joel. Understand your post completely. The home stretch can get very intense, and the slightest thing can have a huge effect one way or the other. Know you will stay the course and give it your all.
Rooting for you, brother!

Great infos Joel, thanks a lot for sharing!
And as I said, I'm surprised to see how similar my contest preparations approach is to yours!
So Joel, since the Light Heavyweight class is up to 195lbs... will you try to reach that bodyweight for next week?

Mo, in the NPC the cutoff for light heavy wt. is 198 1/2lbs. So I won't have any problems more than likely. But I don't really care how much I weigh as long as I'm shredded!
Something interesting I've discovered over the past year is depleting sodium right before a show like most people including myself normally do isn't nessasarily the best thing. I seem to look much better as well as really vascular if I don't sodium deplete and continue to drink plenty of water.
nwtrnr, thank you very much! I'm feeling pretty confident right now, we'll see in a few more days!

Oh yeah, is that something new? Because I've never heard of that before! Anyway, as you said, the miroir is your best adviser, not the scale... Something interesting I've discovered over the past year is depleting sodium right before a show like most people including myself normally do isn't nessasarily the best thing. I seem to look much better as well as really vascular if I don't sodium deplete and continue to drink plenty of water. It's good to see someone else not being afraid of going against old myths. People at the shows always seem to be shocked when they see me having water and sodium backstage! But to be full and vascular you need a certain amount of water and sodium on contest day... The idea is to manipulate it properly the days before so you also wont retain any water under the skin! Only 5 days out...

You guys are too kind! I do try my best though. Hanging around you guys really helps motivate me to do better. You know what they say about rising to the level of the company you keep! You really could not ask for a better bunch of folks than we have here at WOTW! I would love to get to meet all of you in person one day, maybe we could plan to all get together at a big show next year!
