Some random thoughts on my competition, gym and my training partners.
Winning my first powerlifting meet ( novice ) was good. It was even better because all my buddies ( experienced guys ) competing in juniors, seniors and masters ended up bagging gold as well.
Our gym for the fifth time ended up getting prize for the maximum amount of medals won.
My Coach Madhukar Darekar also got a lifetime achievement award. At the age of 70 he can squat 200kg raw.
Our gym is as hardcore as it gets.....started in 1912 it stll caters to some of the best powerlifters, weightlifters and bodybuilders of the country. It's India's answer to metroflex. I shall post the pix soon.
The postworkout meal of my buddies includes beef, beans and beer. That's their staple meal baby.
They give you strange looks if you mention supplements including whey. The mantra here is solid food ( eggs, meat, chicken, baked potatoes, brown ric, veggies etc )
To improve your squat you squat, to improve your deads, you deadlift and same holds true for bench press. Gluteham raises, reverse hypers are unheard of.
Here in competitions parallel squat is given as a "NO LIFT" Ass to the grass baby nothing less.
Most of my buddies compete in all three : powerlifting, weightlifting and bodybuilding with great success.
High protein diet is considered to be excess. It's still the Bill Pearl style : 80 to 100 gms of protein a day tops.
Most of my buddies aren't from well to do families and economically strong. Some of them work like 15 hours a day, night shifts, overtime etc ( mostly manual labour ) but when it's lifting time there ain't no excuse. They live to lift and get strong.
