Ok...had my first set of Epidural steroid injections in my back Friday. Hurt like a MF! That was the MOST intense pain I have ever endured in my life. It did help with the pain in the back and leg, but DAYM!
I'm supposed to get two more rounds. One in two weeks, and another two weeks after that. The Doc and I are gonna have to talk, because I'm not enduring that again without some serious drugs!

Frank, Those are REALLY painful! OUCH! Hopefully when you are done with the other two you will have continued pain relief in your back and leg.

Sorry to hear it was so painful Frank!! Hopefully it pays off.
Sidenote: Both times my wife was pregnant she was way more afraid of the drugs than she was of the pain of childbirth, so she refused the epidural, or anything else. I do not think I would have been so brave. Woman can tolerate a lot more pain than we can.

Karrie: That's "IF" I decide to continue with any more! Rich: Of course they can tolerate pain more than we can...they have to put up with us everyday, and that alone can numb them to any other intense pain!

I feel for you Frank. I've been lucky enough to have never had the back injections but my mother had them routinely for a while. When she was seeing a pain management doc she had several rounds not to mention the other times in her life when she had them. If you get relief from it the intense pain is worth bearing for a little bit - I know when she had it done she would get relief for a while and said it was worth it. Unfortunately her back is so bad it stopped having any positive results after a time.
You can look at this way - 3 short and very intense bouts of pain or a continual trhobbing and nagging that is with you day in and day out. The long term stuff will have a much greater impact both mentally and physically.
Best bet - try to get some "relaxation" meds from the doc ahead of time. Maybe some valium or something - a pain pill like vicodin or something will have very little help and topical lidocain won't do sh*te either as it's more of an internal pain. The valium may simply be the best route. And if he won't do it ask why - and then simply do what you gotta do. ; )=

Thanks Jeremy..
I'll have to see how I feel in a week to ten days, and then I'll play it from there.
All I know is I sure don't want to go through that kind of pain again!

Thanks Jeremy.. I'll have to see how I feel in a week to ten days, and then I'll play it from there. All I know is I sure don't want to go through that kind of pain again! I'm sure it sucks Frank but you need to think longer term. I know when I had my first back surgery and felt like I was dying afterward that the last thing in the world I would do is get another one. Well I really didn't have a choice as I may have died from a leak on the spinal cord where something got hit. I didn;t know this at the time and all I thought was I can't do this again. Well after the second surgery and a couple of days I was feeling better than before and a few weeks later even better. Then I blew through the therapy and have never been better in my life. Sometimes that first step is the hardest and we can't imagine taking another. But then the second isn't so bad after we see the positive results of taking that second step - something we can't see and something we'llhave never seen if we simply don;t do it. Keep your chin up and keep us posted!

I'm sorry to hear that Frank.
One thing is for sure, if there is one guy over here who's tough enough to go through this, it's you beast! I would have cried for hours... and that, it's just BEFORE going to the appointment!
Let us know what you're about to decide. If you decide to get the second one, you can be sure that your WOTW buddies are going to be mentally there with you!

Frank you have been through a lot in the past year or so. I agree with Mo, you are the man who can handle it. Hope to see you painfree and at 110% very soon
