Last week I was doing heavy leg presses, and on one rep at the bottom I felt a rib "pop". Now there are a couple of things going on, but most of all I think the problem is I still have a fairly hefty gut (though it's shrinking, it's still big), and on leg presses it gets pressed into my ribcage and then I have to press up and kind of compress the gut and I think something gave. In any case, it was not terrible and I did end up doing more sets.
This week (Saturday) I was squatting. During warmup (I was using 185 which is very light for me) I went down and at the bottom, before I pushed up out of the hole, something "snapped" in my midsection, not near any bones - more like where the abs and obliques meet. THAT one is very painful, and hurts when I bend or sit down. I also feel like it has to do with the prodigious size of my gut.
What the hell.
I may have to take some time off to heal from this.

Rich..... First slow down buddy. You are doing fine. IF you do not think it is a rib, I think you may have "popped" or mildly tore an intercostal muscle. At least that's what it sounds like from you description. IF that is what it is, not much a doc can do, accept give you something for pain, and tell you rest it. Stay away from ab work, squats, presses, etc. There is always low impact cardio (gut? )arms, shoulders, etc. Good time to re-look your diets, and workouts. I'm making that assumption based on it sounding exactly what happend to my wife last year. She has a short torso, and wears a pretty serious lifitng belt and was squatting WAY deep. When she got to the bottom she heard a "pop", and I was there to spot the bar becuase she almost went down from the pain. Our first thought was she broke a rib from the crunch dwon on her belt. BUT we did go to the doc, and found it to be a mildly torn intercostal muscle. Rest and Recover was the rule. It happens my friend. Remember who it is giving advice about injuries! LOL! Been there, done that! Take it slow, see the doc if necessary, rest. It's part of our lifestyle, and it's bound to happen from time-to-time. Sometimes it just happens. Sometimes we're stupid and hurry and use bad form injuring oursleves (me), but mostly it's because we push ourselves to be better, work harder and become the best we can be. Also sounds like a good time to reflect and do some "journeling". Write down your thoughts about what happend, dates, feelings, etc. Take pics. A teacher may say something like, " If we do not learn from history, we are destined to re-live it". Instead of being the teacher this time, be the student, learn from your experience all that you can. You will just come back stronger and more motivated. It's all good! Keep us updated! Frank

i know what you're talking about.
I had this feeling once when doing leg press. I have my gut sticking pass my rib cage, and thought my ribs were pinching my gut or something.
it could be your intercostal muscle.....or it could be your transversus abdominus which is the deepest layer of your internal abs.
i say go light on some exercises and get adjusted. If it still bothers you, ditch the leg press exercise all together.
