Shawn Ray was in town over the weekend signing autographs and doing a "meet & greet".
I chatted with him for quite a while and was very surprised. Over the years I've come to read up on him as being a very negative person and a bit of a jerk.
I found him to be intelligent, outspoken and very nice. He is very passionate about his beliefs regarding the IFBB in general, but most of what he had to say echoed much of the conversation I've seen on boards as of late.
He had his wife with him, she'd now 6 weeks pregnant, so he's going to be a dad.
We chatted for quite a while... he had the new "Contest Bible" with him and a few photos for signature...
He told me he's flat-out done with ever competing again but looks forward to promoting the sport in general.

Troy, you've confirmed 2 things that the net freaks have been making rumors about for years......... 1- Shawn is done with competing and therefore retired. He always would announce at the beginning of each year whether or not he was competing. This is the first I've heard of it being official. 2- His wife being pregnant. For some reason this is a hot thing ovet at GB. Congrats Shawn! That kid is going to be one strong kid......  |

Thanks Troy...............as I said in a previous thread,Shawn acted just like he was one of the guy`s when I met him. Just goes to show you,that you can`t go by hearsay!!  |

Very true Tim... although, he didn't have his pastor with him, LOL  Perhaps he's different when he brings him around... which he apparrently does a lot... he's found Jesus (didn't know he was lost). T |

Troy, Shawn used to come to my town every summer and hang out on the beach, and I have talked with him numerous times about the BBing scene, he has his days like all of us, I would say it was 50/50 on him being in a good mood or not...

I always liked Shawn Ray. I remember wayyyy back when he and Eddie Robinson were going at it in the teen contests. Both incredible teens. I think of Shawn as one of the few internet active links between the old days of Mentzer and Robinson and the present (even though he is no longer competing). His views and advice are always important to me whether I agree with them or I don't. He always comes across as just one of the guys as well - so much so it's almost easy to forget he was a WORLD CLASS BB...................until you see something like this!  |
