No doubt the Blond Bomber...Dave Draper! Not only the "look" but Dave epitimized what a bodybuilder really is. Still training away, the America, World and Universe titles were almost a side issue for him, TRAINING is where his heart is. And the older I get the more I admire him for his other traits, humility, honor, the desire to help others and the fact that he conquered his demons and stands tall today! Just like someone else we know! The current crop....no thanks!

Almost impossible to narrow down. From the past (although still a presence with his great site), Dave Draper. When you can still look as good as he does at 61, you deserve legendary status. Met him and his wife Laree while they were in NY after 9/11/01. Super people and very knowledgable.
Among current competitors, have huge respect for Lance Johnson. This guy looks amazing at 42, and had a great year. 4th in light heavy in Jr Nationals (should have been 2nd), won class at Masters Nationals, and was 9th in USA light heavy.
Beyond the physique, a true gentleman and role model for the sport. Loved seeing him kick younger butt, and he could show the younger guys a thing or two about sportsmanship. He truly loves to compete and it shows on stage. he is going for overall in next year's Masters Nationals and hopefully qualify for Masters O.
But I am rooting for Jay (like a kid brother to me) to win the Olympia (wish I could get there). And rooting for Tim at Eastern USA!

I have always like Frank Zane a lot. I really do not have much use for the new guys though. The big guts really turn me off. Larry Scott is another guy I liked.

Agree about Zane and Scott, both looking great at 60+. Saw Frank at a gym seminar about 5 years ago and he was very instructive and professional. And like Dave, his books are well done.
Agree about the distended guts being a turn off on most of today's competitors. Another reason, why I like Lance. He is one of the few at any age who can do a vacuum shot these days. Very impressive, IMHO.

Thanks for the great photos. Have known Jay since he won 2000 NOC and among today's guys he has it all.
Beyond the obvious, he is intelligent, sincere and a nice person to be around. Last saw him in June when he guest posed at Atlantic States and he was accommodating to everyone. Always a pleasure to see him. A real class act.

I have quite a few favorites. ;D
L. Priest D. Padilla G. Farah B. Chicarello F. Columbo and of course, the greatest bodybuilder of all time(IMHO) Arnold Scharzanegar(sp?)
I live in the same city as three of the favorites I have chosen. I work with a man who was a competitive BB'er back in the 70's. I heard some good stories about some of those guys.

There is no doubt that the best bodybuilders of all time are in the past. The 'best' will never be duplicated, in my opinion.
Dave Draper, if he walked into the same stadium as todays greats, would draw all the press, all the cameras, and all the love, just because of the perfection, the big blond hair , the huge shoulders and those arms...not to mention the charisma.
But he wasn't the greatest... Frank Zane was perhaps the most perfect. But Larry Scott was the greatest. Larry Scott was the guy next door. He was the handsome face of the boy next door. He was a nice guy...just a kid who built a great body...and all through it...was the classiest example of "you too can do it". Larry Scott was perfect in body, yet gave every young man true hope...that it was possible to be great.

Well of couse Arnold, but: there was always something about Zane, Waller looked powerful, Callender always seemed overlooked, but incredible, Danny had it all, Ray Mentzer could have been the better Mentzer, Rick Wayne was rock hard, Draper was ahead of his time, Louie had such potential, Bill Grant just needed a little more calf, To be continued.....
Hey I could go on all day!!!!

Hey, guys! We're missing the obvious here. Let's give Tim a huge mention. To overcome adversity and look so good and be consistently competitive is inspirational. This is what being a role model is all about.
Go, Tim!
