I wonder how many of you train at home? Are you motivated at home or do you find being with other people gets your heart pumping. I have no trouble getting up for home workouts but I know many can't. I know Franco Columbo,Frank Zane, Bill Pearl, and Clarence Bass have all trained at home. I have worked out at many commercial gyms but I always return to home training.
When I was a kid I worked out in my basement with one of those plastic plate barbells filled with cement. I had a Sears bench that said don't use over 400lbs.. That weight included the lifter.
I then started lifting as a teenager with a fellow Iron maniac who actually built a garage sized shed for lifting in his backyard. We actually had a pretty good set up. We packed that window less shed with good hardcore equiptment. In the winter we had a smelly kerosene heater. Our hands would stick to the bar in those cold NJ winters. I can remember digging our way to the shed during a bad winter storm.
When I got married we were living in an apartment. My mother in law was nice enough to let me use her basement to set up a small gym. I had an olympic bar, bench and squat racks. Enough basic equiptment to get some really good workouts. Plus my new wife got to visit her mother almost every time I worked out.
In my first house I set up in my garage. It was a very small garage. I often wondered how a decent sized car would fit. I never had a car in it due to my weights. Inside I accumulated a decent amount of equiptment. I had a leg extention/curl;lat pulley;squat racks;adjustable dumbells to 95lbs;sit up board; and a plate loading calf machine. I had quite a few Jubinville benchs and machines. My little house had no basement and my weights shared space with my four kid's junk. When I sold that house a real estate lady was in shock with her mouth open when she looked in the garage. This lady has never seen a barbell or a gym in her life. She told my wife she thought we were into S&M because of the gym. It took her awhile to realize that they were exercise machines and not kinky sex restraints.
When I sold that house I had the fun of moving that stuff into the new house where I live now. I think my interest in bodybuilding has turned my basement into a really nice gym if I say so myself. The music is always to my liking. If I could only get my teenage son to stop skate boarding down there.
