Comparatively, JP Fux was lucky... From azcentral.com www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/articles/0322little-ON.htmlFormer Steelers linebacker, dies while weightlifting Associated Press Mar. 22, 2005 11:27 AM PITTSBURGH - David Little, a durable linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers who was voted to the Pro Bowl in 1990, died while weightlifting at home in Miami. He was 46. Little had heart disease, and a cardiac fluttering Thursday caused him to drop on his chest 250 pounds of weights, which rolled onto his neck and suffocated him, the coroner said Tuesday. Little was found by his sons, David Jr. and Darien. Little played his entire 12-year career in Pittsburgh after he was drafted out of Florida in the seventh round in 1981. He started 125 of the 179 games he played for the Steelers and once played in 89 in a row. His last season in the league was 1992. His older brother, Larry Little, was an All-Pro guard for the Miami Dolphins. Little is also survived by his wife, Denise, his mother, daughter and four sisters

Wow,that`s rough........sorry to hear it.
You hear a lot of these stories over the years..............I never use a spot normally, because my gym is full of college kids who have no clue, but if I go extra heavy,I`ll always ask someone............better safe than sorry.

now that we are talking about safety, and spotting..
i was wondering do any of you ask for a spot when doing squats in a cage.....or a spot when shoulder pressing on the smith machine?

I'm with Tim; I never use a spotter. Occasionally, one of the trainers (one of the few who knows what he's doing; he trains hard, has competed and won several competitions) will come over between clients and give me a few forced reps, but that is rarely. I squat in a power rack and put the pins a few inches below my deepest squat. If I don't make the weight, I dump it. As far as the noise and abuse to the equipment, that's what those racks are made for. A rack that I absolutely love and use for bench press movements is the Maxrack. It's similar to the Smith, but you have free motion also on the horizontal, not just the vertical; it doesn't lock you in to an up and down motion only. It has safety pins you can place almost anywhere. I don't use the Smith machine for anything, so sorry, can't help you there...

If my training partner is not with me, i would ask for a spotter: It's a safe way, if not the only way, to go beyond faillure!! ( ...or a good way to ruin you set if the person that spot you help you too much for you last 7 reps ) Mo ;D

Always use a spotter- Weight room requires it and I like having trainer Tom watching my form and kicking my ass to go heavier on every workout.
Plus years ago I got stuck like the guy in the article. Luckily I did not use collars so I was able to ditch.
Embarrasing but since I was alone in the old Downtown "Y". no one saw it
