I was reading the latest issue of MD. In which contains an interview with Flex Wheeler and Shawn Ray.
They need to change the title to "the whinning brothers." or "Sour Grapes" Cause thats what it is.
However it made me think about why we compete. Which made me think of the last time I stepped on stage.
In 1994 I considered competing in the Pgh Championships. I still had no idea of how to diet properly. The show was in May. Well at 2 weeks out I weighed about 210-212, and still had a slight fold of fat around the middle. I was also smooth in the thighs. I decided to continue my diet but target a show in August. I use to work with a fellow member here (EBA84) and he helped me with my diet. Which became nothing more then the following every day for 3 months
12 egg white, a cup of cream of rice
5 cans of tuna (1 can every 2 hours),
12 egg whites right before bed.
I got my weight down to 185, and carbed up to 190 for the show. I was never in better shape in my life!
I mean my upper body was ripped. I never saw cross striations in my triceps before, or in my lower back. It was exciting!
At the show everyone told me it was between me an one other guy.
Well it didn't pan out that way. He took 4th and I took 3rd.
I was dissapointed. I mean I had people saying I could take the entire show. BUt I placed 3rd!
The next day a few of the bodybuilders were asked to pose in front of a 5000+ crowd at the "point" which is downtime Pittsburgh, during a local event known as the 3 rivers regatta.
I was one of them.
After we did that many people came to me to tell me how impressed they were with me. These were non-bodybuilding types, you know the average joes.
That was a great feeling.
I can also remember 2 weeks out from the show my wife and I were walking through a park. Some of the trails have pull up bars and sit up benches set up as a type of coss training course. So I was doing pull ups without my shirt when another family came by with their little girl. The little girl commented to her daddy, "look daddy, look at all the muscles."
I can also remember waking up and seeing my abs!!!
The point to all of this is when you compete, never forget your doing it for yourself!
Your not doing it for a trophy or for any other reason. You do it for self improvement the gratification of making that tough journey. Pushing yourself to a limit that you never had before. Achieving that is more gratifying then winning any show.
Sure not getting the placing you feel you deserve can sting, but its an objective sport.
Making the journey is the reward.
