Do you guy`s have periods in your training when you kind of back off on the poundages and/or intensity, to give your bodies a break? I feel this is vital to maintaining progress.I don`t mean a total layoff, which I think is advisable at times also,I`m just talking about lighter "easier" training periods. I feel the need to do this presently as I`m just feeling a bit burnt-out, but don`t want to push it too much beyond this point at the moment, and end up overtraining.

Tim, Until recently i have been training with a D1 football player (linbacker) and we have been doing 6-8 week periodizations, one of the guys in my gym is an ex natl level powerlifter and now does strongman stuff, he has taught me about this type of training. It does help the body and gives you time to recover and rest your joints etc. and when you go at it 100 % again you are stronger, so it doent hurt to lay off for a while.

STBBG, I hear ya ,a former training partner of mine Luke Malone, does a few down sized type of training cycles after contest, or long periods of hard training and dieting. He always comes back bigger and stronger, and his joints get a much deserved rest too.I`m aware of powerlifting methodology in this regard ,but I just listen to my body, nothing scientific or mapped out,as a planned cycle ;D.I`ve been training so long I kind of know when I`m ready to go heavy again.I think this "learning" ones body,by listening to it`s feedback, is crucial for continued gains in size and strength.I`ll go light next week with machines and dumbells,as well as just getting a pump with high reps. The week after,I`ll go a little harder and heavier, and hopefully I`ll be ready the week after that.If not,I don`t sweat it, asI know I`m not going to lose anything, and will more than likely be doing my body good.In the old days, when I was a young kid,I would have gotten pissed and still attempted heavy training ,dsregarding my body`s feedback, thus opening myself up to overtraining, and or possible injury. It took me a long time to realize I was only human.Besides lately I`ve gottenbigger and set a ton of new PR`s ,so I can`t really complain.
