Dude, I've been making this statement FOR YEARS!!!!
I ask a vegetarian three or four questions, and have yet to find one that can answer all of them with a valid argument.
1) What does essential mean? 2) How many essential amino acids are there? 3) How many essential fatty acids are there? 4) How many essential carbohydrates are there?
And sometimes, I'll also ask a fifth question, which it usually doesn't get to this point: 5) What does "protein" mean in Latin? It comes from the word "protos" meaning...what?
NATURE has settled it's own argument, for me and the others attempting to debate or have some sort of discourse.

Not sure I get the carb reference. Carbs are "macro"... and depending on the carb, consist to varying degrees of some of these elements.

I couldn't agree more either, I think that carbs have been over rated for years (ever since they "constructed" the food pyrimid) and protein has been under rated for just about as much time. If you ask any bodybuilder today I think that just about all of them will have protein first on their priority list. I would add though, that as Sapphire stated, there are people who do need carbs so as not to feel tired or sluggish or have problems focusing. Vin.

I think you guys are missing the point... those items listed as essential are "building blocks"- "Carbohydrates" would not be on such a list, they are built of those items. So it's an apples/oranges comparison. or am I missing something? I so agree that one can get by on very low carbs depending on the individual. But science ghas shown they are the primary nutrient from gray matter, right?

Fit. I think the point here is just that carbs are not needed to sustain life and growth.
Protein = most important
Fats = Essential
Carbs.?.?.?

Well sure- I was just being very literal to the actual list.
Technically, as we all know, what is essential is glucose.
Body converts carbohydrates to generate glucose, the functional molecule of energy within cells. Glucose is broken down to ATP, (energy). We all know that the body can then convert amino acids from proteins to glucose if you are totally carb depleted.
However, for many people they can't get past the physical and mental changes that occur (for many) when fully entering ketosis.
So essential? Technically, no. But pretty critical to the average person's functioning.
I've kept carb to below 100 or even less daily for mighty long stretches. I got lean, but in hindsight I believe it also helped slow down my metabolism too much.

As far as my energy levels, I really up my caffeine intake when I diet, so I have never noticed a drop in my drive no matter how low my carbs go or how much cardio I have to do. Vin.

I get so cranky and tired on very low carbs. All I want to do is sleep. So this does not happen to any of you? No problems concentrating? That is why I did not compete. I just felt terrible all the time.

I just felt terrible all the time. I can get stretches where I'm pretty tired and cranky when eating really low. The trick is to get there gradually, not cold turkey. Though onec I keto's for a period, then going back to low carb hasn't been hard.

I just felt terrible all the time. All of those symptoms are very common on a very low carb diet Sapphire and a lot of people complain about them, so you are certainly not alone there. As I mentioned above, I take in a ton of caffeine when I go low carb, which seems to keep those things at bay for me. Vin.

I can't do low carb-I rip my muscle down so fast I look like a skeleton. I find I need at least 125g a day or I waste away. Some body types respond better to low carbs than others and I'm the same as Sapph! Higher fats work for me well though and less protein also... Guess I am strange...(but you guys already know that!) #smileygrouplaugh5js#

Sapph I eat 40-50 g fats per day,higher than most women but it keeps my hormones stable too

See, your bod will use the fats in place of carbs for energy. Between 1800 - 2000 cals.... 65 - 90 grams of EFA's mostly in the form of Nuts and Natty PB. This will also give you some extra trace carbs and fiber
