Has anybody got any links to any sites that would help with overcoming swimming anxiety? Or even any advice on how to learn to swim as an adult?
I've just booked a course of adult swimming lessons that lasts 8 weeks and the next start date is 26th Sept. I somehow never managed to learn to swim back in my school days, and now aged 28 i have set myself this challenge. The main reason for this is that my fiance and i are flying out to the carribean on 28th Feb 2006 to get married. There will be just us, no family or friends, no stress and just loving being in paradise. We're off to St Lucia and having an all inclusive luxury wedding/honeymoon. I would really love to be able to swim in the sea and enjoy some water activities too. Theres an excursion where we stop off at a romantic waterfall and pool for lunch, sounds amazing so i want to be able to really enjoy the moment of being somewhere like that. Luckily for me, we have managed to book our stay at a place that has even got an outdoor gym!

Hey Lux. We may be going to St Lucia for our honeymoon next year as well. Although, we just got turned on to St. John. So who knows. Anyway. The best thing that you can do is go to an instructor at the YMCA or something. You said that you signed up for some lessons already.. GREAT. I learned how to swim before I could crawl at a local YMCA.

Lux, i would like to help you, but i swim like a refregerator myself so… ;D Seriously, i never been a great swimmer, but a friend of mine spent a couple of hours with me, gave me some hints and it allows me to "Survive" and even have some fun in water ;D Good luck! The carribean looks like our idea of paradise, i havn't heard of St Johns before though Rubicon. I'll have to do a google search and have a peek. When are you planning to get married? Are you having a big family and friends gathering? We decided that we would prefer to have the moment to ourselves, it might be selfish but everybody is happy with our decision.
I could never understand how bodies float when i tried to learn to swim in school, much to the teachers frustration! I'm hoping that as i have grown, i have got the ability to adapt my mindset to overcome previous obstacles in my life. Failing that i can always take some bright orange armbands to the caribbean ;D

St Johns is BEAUTIFUL. We are getting married next September. We are doing a small intimate wedding. Just us and our immediate family at a small chapel on the ocean. The following week we are having a BIG bash outside at Jen's parents house. HUGE yard. Its going to be great. We will have tons of food, a band (not a wedding band), horse shoes, vollyball, blow up tent jumping thing, even a mechanical bull. Fun stuff. We just want a low key cookout/ party. we want everyone to have fun. Thats it. Anyway. I just found out about St Johns myself. You can rent an increadible villa there. They have something like 13 beaches that you can rent a jeep to drive to.... Best of luck with your wedding. Remember its your day. Not anyone elses. Do WHATEVER makes you happy. Too many people plan their weddings around what others want. We are just out to hvae fun and remember our day forever.

Great attitude, R. The day belongs to you and your bride, so do what makes you happy. Your happiness should be your family's happiness.
Make sure you have a video/dvd and photo album done to keep the memories forever.

Well my first lesson went ok, i didn't drown so thats a bonus ;D There was only a couple of us learning so i didn't feel too nervous. I am the slowest to progress but at least i look good in my shorts ;D Only half hour lessons so time went quick, trying to swim on our backs to begin with. Placing feet under the bar attached to the pool and lay back to "feel" how the body is buoyant. Yeah fine until i took my feet away from the bar and some little demon in my head was setting off the panic alarm I'm finding it tough to completely relax in the pool and break away from any support. I'm sure my confidence will grow and hopefully i'll be swimming before the end of the year!

Hey guys, i can swim Well, sort of. I didn't sink too much so i can kind of swim ;D Second lesson last nite and i managed to get 3 parts of the way across the pool. On my back and front, yay! To begin with i had to put some flippers on to get used to the feel of propelling my body through the water. Think i might have to see about getting some surgery to have some permanantly ;D I didn't do so good without them but by my own choice i took them off and practiced without them for the last part of the lesson. What an amazing confidence boost! Felt on such a high because i'm facing and beating one of my fears! Grrrr ;D Makes me start to wonder how i can challenge myself once i have really got to grips with this swimming. I hope this is inspiration to somebody out there to tackle one of their fears, and kick its ass

^^ ;D ;D
I didn't go to my lesson this week, i was still fighting a bit of a cold on Monday so didn't want to catch any more germs from the pool. Back in the pool next Monday, to commence the training to become the next Eric the eel ;D ;D Remember the guy from the 2000 Olympics that came last but won the hearts of many? ;D
