Once you get up in age, when you bulk, you look terible as it all goes to the obliques. No more bulking up for me as I know I will never be huge anyway,so I just try to bring up weak areas and improve on proportion and conditioning. Real easy for me to put on fat.......not easy at all for me to build muscle. YOU CAN`T FLEX FAT!!! Totally agreed! I bulked up last yr. to 225lbs. at 5'10" which doesn't sound so bad but I looked horrible! (Check pics in my old journal!) Tim's right at our age I think its pointless to bulk up. If I haven't gotten to a ripped 225 by now its probably not going to happen! I always remember the old Mike Mentzer saying, "don't let your abs become memories"! He actually meant "MAMMARIES"

I LOVE food. I love desserts, I love juicy burgers, I love beer, I love carbs in any form, so basically I love any food that makes you FAT. I have love handles and a belly, sometimes I just accept it as me, but sometimes I yearn to have those chiseled abs, but I think of all the delicious foods I'd have to give up. However people with fat around the midsection are at higher risk for heart attacks and type 2 diabetes, which are both in my family. Although I'm only 27 I totally notice that I carry fat alot easier than when I was say 19 years old. Anyways, it takes a TREMENDOUS amount of self discipline to say no to the foods that put on the pounds and hide your abs. I will diet hardcore in the Spring, but I am dreading that time. Dieting SUCKS, completely torture. I wish I could enjoy it like some of you do.

If you have those health concerns in your family and tend to carry excess weight, your diet should have started YESTERDAY, not sometime in the Spring, and should be a way of life for the rest of your life.... don't worry about "chiseled abs",you don't need to diet like a bodybuilder, but you DO need to clean your diet up.Just looking out for you, bro. Yeah I appreciate it man. No offense taking... I just lack the self discipline to do it. I could quit drinking and smoking, but having a very strict diet is very hard because quitting the other stuff is just passive, you just don't have to do it,. whereas dieting is hard work, has to be done every 2.5 hours, and you have to plan your entire day to what you eat. Also social events, forget it, because that will throw you off.
I will try in a couple of months once I finish this bulking cycle.

Jay, You don't HAVE to eat every 2.5 hours....I NEVER have. In fact I eat closer to every 3.5-4 hours, off season or pre contest. There are alot of ways to adapt your diet to fit YOUR lifestyle. I go out with my wife to restaurants ( except the last 6 weeks before a contest) whenever we want, and social events are no problem either. NOTHING is set in stone.

I just cannot feel full eating fish, chicken, etc. I usually have to eat heavy meals with red meat and lots of carbs to be full, and as of now I eat every 3 hours. And I'm only 160lbs but mostly fat, I have skinny/fat bodytype. So for my own health I should diet down and get rid of all this fat., but it's so difficult. I need to learn self control first.

Maybe Layne can even pop in this thread, and elaborate a bit. But he once mentioned that "everyone is concerned about turning on protein synthesis, but nobody seems to think about turning it off." Think about it, sometimes we could just be consuming so much protein that eventually our body acclimates to it, and the only thing to do is consume more- though this may lead to excess (and unnecessary) weight gain because the calories would most likely still be absorbed but the protein wouldn't be assimilated. Instead of consuming more, why not just go a little longer (as Layne suggests) or maybe even cut protein down for a couple of days? But in general, I don't think you have to carry a collection of plastic tupperware with you, I've done that for years. And in the recent times, I decided "Why do I do this?" I just wait a couple of extra minutes/hours, and increase my calorie intake slightly to make up for the difference. No biggie, and it's worked out fine.

That's ANOTHER one........I have NEVER woke up in the middle of the night to eat........too many people are "consumed" with this "I gotta eat" syndrome....you're NOT going to LOSE your body overnight. IMO most bodybuilders overeat, both in terms of frequency and caloric totals. I think that has ALOT to do with distended stomachs and the inability of alot of guys to really come in shredded. If you're not gonna take drugs to help you assimilate all that food and other drugs to then help you rip up, what the @#$% are you doing eating a zilliion extra calories for? To gain 3-5 lean pounds of muscle during the year!!!! OVERKILL!!! Unless you see yourself as a RIPPED 250 LB. HW one day, there is NO NEED to eat that way. Keith

Kieth. I get up and have a shake because I need to fulfill my daily diet micro's. It is actually easier for me to do that than to incorperate another meal in the daytime with my hectic schedule. I am not consumed by it. I am trying to simplify it. I start my diet at one calorie level and end at another. Right now its 7 meals per day. In order to do that, on most days, I wake up to pee and have a shake with natty PB.. I do not gain or retain muscle easily. It VERY hard for me. Always has been. I do whatever it takes to take myself to another level. If it works why change it?

I get up two -three times a night and the dogs always thinkit's time to go out and play too. So I simply make a shake with a couple of raw eggs and have that. My last meal is usually arond 8:30-9:00 and I don't eat agin until 8am so the shake in the middle of the night helps two fold. It gets my the requirements I set out for myself and it keeps me from gorging in the morning. Whatever works best for the individual is the key. Sal

I was just making a point to Mystic about nothing being written in stone so he doesn't feel like he HAS to diet it a certain way. Don't forget, I REALLY don't count ANYTHING except carbs, but that's just me...if it was me I'd just figure a way to spread a little more into 6 meals instead of waking to have a 7th.

It gets my the requirements I set out for myself and it keeps me from gorging in the morning. Whatever works best for the individual is the key. Sal Sal, AGAIN that is my point EXACTLY...NOTHING in this sport HAS to be done a certain way:What works for me has ALWAYS been contrary to the "conventional" wisdom: Conventional Wisdom says eat every 2-3 hours I eat every 3-4 hours, sometimes 4.5! Conventional Wisdom says do pre and post workout supps I never do pre or post workout supps Conventional Wisdom says don't do AM training on an empty stomach I ALAWYS train in the AM on an empty stomach Conventional Wisdom says each BP once a week/lower volume I have ALWAYS trained on a double split hitting each BP 2 times in a week to 8 days with ALOT of volume. Conventional Wisdom says use Whey/BCAA's/Creatine/Glutamine I don't take ANY Whey/BCAA's/Creatine/Glutamine...everything comes from whole food. Conventional wisdom says count your macros/weigh food,etc.,.. I count carbs ONLY and have NEVER weighed my food. Conventional Wisdom says have your BF measured I go ONLY by what the mirror tells me. Coventional Wisdom says cardio to cut for contests I have NEVER done cardio in my pre contest prep Conventional wisdom says 7-8 hours of sleep and naps I NEVER sleep more than 5-6/No naps Conventional Wisdom says limit fat intake for cutting I basically eat a HIGH fat, high protein, almost no carb diet for my pre-contest diet....24 weeks for this show! I could keep going, but I think you get what I'm saying NOTHING IS WRITTEN IN STONE and I just think alot of guys get in trouble, actually holding themselves back, blindly following the "conventional wisdom of the day". I have NEVER done something because some pro in a magazine said he did, or because there was a medical research paper somewhere that "theoretically" supported whatever was being touted, or simply because it was what everyone else was doing . I have, and always will be, my own lab..my own living experiment...I realize what I do may seem very unusual compared to most...to me that's just proof that nothing is infallible. Keith

I guess I'm doing something right... last night my wife tells me "I like the body the way it was 'before' too... you don't have to be bigger for me". I think she's thinking I"m putting too much pressure on.. but anyway so I asked her- well are my muscles looking too big to you or is my stomach or face gettin' too fat looking or what? She says "everything is just looking bigger- you're getting that kinda bodybuilder look".. ha well needless to say that made me feel good. Truth is she's always gone for the "fit" yuppie type like I was. I haven't changed that much but like I tell her- this is something I"m doing for me. It' makes me happy and that in turn benefits everyone around me. So my point is.. I guess my bulking is going ok ;D
