Hey guys:
I weigh more now that ever- 198lbs and 5'9. People would say I look fit or built and I see that I look pretty good but also, I also have a stomach now- never have had one before. I know it will go away when I diet for my show in the fall.. but when do you know when your bulking is good and when are you just turning in to a fat-a$$... When do you stop bulking?
Seems like a dumb question but this is my first time actually doing a bulking program and sucessfully packing on lbs.
WHat do you guys thinK?

When you have to go out and by FAT pants to be comfy then its time to stop.. After a while it feels as though the muscle gains halt and the fat gains go into high gear.

For me when I just feel uncomfortable is when I stop "bulking". Like when you feel your stomach jiggle in the car when you hit a bump in the road it is time to cut back.

I'm 5'2" and went up to 185 lbs +. 3 years ago I was 185 lbs...but my waist was 44 " !!! Now when I bulk to 185 lbs....my waist is at 32-34" Better......but I hold ALL my fat in my abs. First place it goes, and the last place to leave. Wanted to try to be a lightheavyweight....helll...Lee Preist? Danny Padilla, etc. they all did it...why not me? WHY? Because my genetics are different. Because I just started this adventure 3 years ago....not when I was 13 yrs old. Because I'll be 50 this year and my metabolism is different now. Are these excuses? Perhaps. Are they a reality check? YES...big time. So...point is.....I became one with the fact that I am short and getting up there in age when it comes to be a competetive bodybuilder...so I gotta deal with the cards I've been dealt. I also get a BodPod done one every 3 -6 months. It measures my lean muscle mass and body fat to the exact gram. Nothing like seeing the truth in black and white. It gives me a gauge to tell me where I'm at, and where I need to go. It's part of my road map. Can I get cut! SURE! But not at 185 + lbs! As I lightweight perhaps? Or just fu?%$ the numbers....look in the mirror and beleive what you see. The mirror won't lie to you. Just my 2 Cents

THanks guys- my mind is at ease a little now. I haven't had to go out and buy big pants yet- Hopefully I have to do that when my quads get too big hahaha=== if you saw my legs you'd know how funny and rediculous that statement is . Thanks guys..... point taken and now I can still just work on bulkin' up more! Mike

Mike, I get up to 210-215, 32-33 inch waist in my off season. That's at a height of a little over 5'8". I compete as a Middleweight so I get down to just below 175 for my contests with a waist measurement of 27". That might sound like alot of weight to drop, but it's NOTHING compared to what some of the light heavies and heavyweight guys that I know drop. John DeFendis told me something a long time ago that I will always remember in relation to this subject...he told me that if you're worried about seeing your abs all year, you'll never improve. don't let yourself get totally out of hand, but the extra bodyweight will help you move bigger weights, which in turn will build bigger muscles.

I stop if my gut gets past my chest when I'm standing relaxed. I don't see my abs offseason, I don't care. I do get bigger pants when I have to, my legs grow very well, unfortunately so does my arse! With that in mind I try to keep a slight reign on my bulked weight. My body will let me know when IT feels like growing bigger. Forcing yourself to put on more wieght is a likely sign that you're just putting on fat. My offseason bodywieght has gone up over the years and it took some time to adjust to it. My first BULK was a fat one. I got to 273 and my belly was hanging, I had to lose 73 pounds to get on stage and I was still a little smooth. My next offseason (I took a year off to get some earned muscle not just put on weight) I hit a high of 265 walking around weight and came into the show 10 pounds heavier and more cut. I took another year off and this time my body "settled" at 275. I tried to push it to 280+ and managed for a week or so but it was uncomfortable and I felt FAT!. My body wasn't ready for that. I tried forcing myself to get bigger and if I would have accomplished this I'm sure it would have been more fat and nothing else.
You have to listen to what your body is telling you and know what you're comfort level is for a given time. But it is true, if you want rock hard abs all the time you're not going to progress very fast if at all.
You can't carve a 200 pound statue from a 180 pound rock. But you don't want 100 pounds of mud on top of a 200 pound slab of granite either.

Plus, I have two veins- one on each side of my forehead- and when those go away I know it's time to cut back. Sad thing is, right now I'm sitting right around 205, and I still have those veins! Like Mr Beefy, I store all my fat in my midsection. I can have veins everywhere on my shoulders, chest, back/neck, legs/calves, but I might be 8-0% BF and it's ALL stored in my abdominal area.

I took a long time to reconcile the whole "off-season" thing. For most of my adult life I was weak and obese. My all-time high was 227 muscle-free pounds. I'm 5'10, and I was wearing size 40 pants. When I finally got my act together and lost the fat, I said I would NEVER be that guy again. And I'm not. But I do want to grow lean mass, and that means adding fat as well. And it took me a long time to accept that this fat is different. I'd start to eat big to gain muscle, but panic and cut calories as soon as I started getting fat.
Now I'm a lot more comfortable. I AM too fat, but not by much, and I know I've added a lot of quality mass as well. I am currently around 210 lbs, but at a size 34-36. Not bad!

Well I'm 5'9, 200lbs and wear a 36 comfortably... so I'm fatter than you are but ok with it for now! haha.. It'll all come off when I cut up this fall- looking forward to it!

Well we men should never talk about our waist sizes as women don't talk about weight or age. When my waist is pushing 40 well.... I say my legs are just too big for my other pants. While that may be true my belly is just FAT!!!!
All that aside, I have finally started to see the first positive signs of dieting. My 36 - 38 jeans (depending on the brand) are WAY too lose in the waist now and the thighs are still filled out!!! WHOOPEE!!! I can honestly say at 265 my waist is tightening up and I just may look like a bodybuilder again in a few more weeks.

Once you get up in age, when you bulk, you look terible as it all goes to the obliques. No more bulking up for me as I know I will never be huge anyway,so I just try to bring up weak areas and improve on proportion and conditioning. Real easy for me to put on fat.......not easy at all for me to build muscle. YOU CAN`T FLEX FAT!!!

Well, for all you comparing height vs. waistlines.... I'm 5'8" around 205 and I still wear maintain my 32" off season waist. I wear 36" waist jeans, but that's because my legs are too big to fit into anything else. I think the last diet I did, back in 03-04, I had a 28" waist @ 185 or so.

I bulked up last yr. to 225lbs. at 5'10" which doesn't sound so bad but I looked horrible! (Check pics in my old journal!) Tim's right at our age I think its pointless to bulk up. If I haven't gotten to a ripped 225 by now its probably not going to happen! I always remember the old Mike Mentzer saying, "don't let your abs become memories"!
